the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 107 no 12 tuesday october 26 1999 all the lehigh news first by jenn keenan news editor new web page aims for better marketing the reaction to the preview of the new lehigh university web page has been very positive according to ron ticho assistant vice president of university relations and steve oblas design director of university communications there have been 1,200 viewers but only a handful of e-mail comments oblas said from working with students i get more ver bal feedback and that has all been positive oblas added that the e-mail comments have been more technical questions than general concerns about the new site the link to the preview site was installed on the home page oct 18 oblas is hopeful that a link to the full new site which will be placed above the picture on the current home page will be introduced by nov 8 i'm confident we'll be able to get it up and working by the bth we have a quality assurance team going through every link and page of the new site oblas said they are almost finished but we want to make sure we can deliver the best product possible he added that if the speed and quality of the page is good then the new site will be able to launch oblas said the default home page will still appear when users visit the site but other com ponents of the site will start to be updated we want to be sure people are not thrown into the new page it will be changed gradually he said also information resources is helping by improving computing services on cam pus to make sure people are aware of the changes and that the changes are made in stages so that people can quickly access what they need the plans for the new site began in august 1998 when the offices of academic affairs and public affairs asked that an evaluation be done of the web site the main concern was whether the university was being properly marketed there was a sense that we weren't leveraging an opportunity ticho said the university met with outside compa nies to see what they could do for the site ticho said they received eight proposals from different companies and had an advi sory group review the proposals and decide on lipman hearne lipman hearne came in and inter viewed administration and formed focus groups with alumni students prospective students and parents ticho said their research focused on what these groups wanted they asked these groups to make recommendations for the site the focus was to make sure that all graphic courtesy of university relations the new web site will have two separate default pages one for non-university members and one for university members this is the one for non-university members it will allow visitors to access the information they need more easily and will debut in november symphonic choir performs in a night at the opera by gina montana news writer the music department hosted a night at the opera ii — the three divas at the zoellner arts center friday and saturday night the three divas margaret cusack eugenie grunewald and diane ketchie were accompanied by lehigh's choral arts symphonic choir directed by dr steven sametz in addition to traveling around the world displaying their aural and acting skills each of the performing soloists has pre viously graced lehigh's stages classrooms and audiences with their musical wisdom and talents cusack winner of the international american music competition in carnegie hall performed a piece from richard wagner's epic opera tannhauser she depicted the knight tannhauser who struggles with the ultimate decision between sacred and profane love and spirituality and sensuality eugenie grunewald's solo performance captured the intricate drama that lies within giuseppe verdi's ii trovatore the opera focuses on the plight of a gypsy azucena whose mother was killed for bewitching the count di luna's son diane ketchie's initial performance was from vincenzo bellini's norma she performed as the druid priestess norma split between her duties as a priestess and her adorning love for the enemy the divas eventually combined their vocal abilities in an excerpt from the comical opera der rosenkavalier by richard strauss the encore champagne choirs represented a scene from a nineteenth century celebration in vienna from die fledermaus the celebration consisted of a high tempo exclamatory opera passage ending with an explosion of noisemakers confetti and streamers from the choral union in reflection of the festivities the event's director sametz said we offer you a rich cross-section of operatic life from german romanticism through italian bel canto to the american musical chris frisco 02 said that the divas transcend what we know and bring the world of opera to life although there is much allure and prestige that accom panies the role of a diva ketchie does not concentrate on the glamour of the role ketchie describes her diva posi tion as simply a privilege to sing this music tiffany giangiulio 02 a member of the university choir celebrated her experiences in working with the tal ents of her peers and professional artists under the direc tion of sametz giangiulio was happy to have this opportunity and enjoyed singing with the divas giangiulio said to sing with such talented pre madonnas and to be under such
