the brown and white slehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 106 no 41 all the lehigh news first friday april 16 1999 walesa addresses the future of democracy by meredith bartlett news writer lech walesa former polish president and nobel peace prize winner spoke about the end of communism in poland a change beginning with his democratic election on monday in baker hall in the zoellner arts center his speech was part of his goal to address global issues especially the future of democracy we can reach the conclusion that the new era will be completely different walesa said walesa also discussed poland's official membership in nato occurring earlier this month he called poland a full nato mem ber with honest intentions we always are a faithful ally he said however walesa's comments did not always cast a favorable light on the united states especially its present college generation he scolded younger americans for tak ing their voting privileges too lightly the united states is a bad example of democracy he said they do not partici pate in the elections walesa expressed his hope that the future will see a more politically active generation of americans also he criticized several current world leaders i'm sorry to say we lack politicians of vision in today's world but instead we have politicians of television he said one of the speaker's most memorable qualities was his sense of humor i have encouraged american generals to come over to poland by generals i mean general electric and general motors walesa said he also talked about the relationship between russia and germany and poland's strategic placement between the two they are very sociable nations fre quently visiting each other on one occasion they forgot and stayed in poland for over 140 years he said walesa issued a challenge for the future we're living in the era of over-thrown communism once there was a divided world but now the question is whether or not we have a better world on that note walesa questioned the equality of the present day global economy b&w photo by loring day lech walesa former polish president and nobel peace prize winner received a standing ovation after his speech monday in zoellner arts center pancake breakfast in honor of david biddle by noelia cabrera news writer all proceeds will go to help pay medical expenses for the junior meningitis patient to kick off greek week 99 there will be a pancake breakfast in honor of david biddle 00 an architecture/civil engineering major was diagnosed with meningitis earlier this semester the event will take place on upper centennial i lawn weather permitting in the event of rain the breakfast will be held in rathbone hall the benefit is from 12 to 3 p.m sunday tickets are only 5 and can be purchased at the door all money raised will go to biddle and his family to help with his medical expenses any additional donations beyond the tickets will be much appreciated kate ball 00 is the co-chair for greek week 99 this is a perfect situation to help one of our own ball said everyone including students faculty athletes and even members of the local community are invited all faculty gryphons sports team captains and house presidents have been sent letters inviting them to the breakfast and informing them on the purchase of block tickets for the event i've really appreciated all the support we've gotten from all the houses and campus faculty and staff ball said the original idea for this event kicking off greek week came from ball and netta stancu 00 both sisters of pi beta phi sorority one day we were talking about ideas for ways to help him ball said once we had come up with the idea we then decided to bring up our idea to jay anhorn and greek affairs anhorn is the coordinator of greek affairs and the residence life coordinator for lower centennials we're very excited for this fund raiser and really hope that a lot of students turn out anhorn said it's a very important event for a good cause many organizations have been very generous with their donations for the event junior ifc and the girls volleyball team has been really great they're volunteering their time on sunday to help out with this event ball said jess mccarthy 99 is biddle's best friend dave has really appreciated all the help from everyone who has supported him she said meningoccal meningitis is an infection causing swelling of the meninges or the lining surrounding the brain and spinal cord according to an article written by the brown and white the disease is primarily spread through close extended exposure to the same air in an enclosed space secondary . methods of contracting the disease include close contact such as kissing coughing and sneezing or sharing the same drinking glass even though the symptoms are recognizable victims of this disease may mistake it for the flu biddle contracted bacterial meningitis the more serious of the two kinds of meningitis infections the other kind is viral meningitis which is more com mon and rarely fatal victims of this type of meningitis are weakened but almost always make a complete recovery symptoms of both kinds include vomiting headache drowsiness seizures high temperature joint aching or pain stiff neck or dislike of light the disease spreads quickly through the body and can cause a great amount of brain damage in just a few hours a
