of daedalus however this maze must not have any tall bushes to hide behind and no bench es to sit on the planned purpose of this garden was for it to be a safe place where the people of the com munity could gather the final design was accom plished by a collaboration bet ween the archi kids a group of local elementary students and lehigh students in his article sean dooley 98 said in our garden we wanted to capture the essence of this period of change by perhaps somewhat naively envisioning our garden as a seed of growth sprouting in the shadow of the steel plant this seed of growth was a successful effort to bring the univer sity north and south bethlehem closer together this garden is now a beautiful place where members of the com munity can choose to gather following the theme of jennifer keenan assistant news editor jennifer becker a nutrition consultant for the sports medicine department spoke tuesday night about a serious health problem that often affects female athletes called the female athlete triad in perella auditorium of rauch business center the triad is a chain-link series of disor ders that generally begins with disordered eat ing which if left untreated can lead to amen orrhea and eventually to osteoporosis in women becker said the actual trigger of the triad is energy deficiency which is caused by eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia becker said a characteristic of anorexia is voluntary starvation factors of the disorder include coming from a middle or upper class family and being an over-achiever most affected are young women between the ages of 13 and 14 or 17 and 18 and the disorder is generally based on losing control becker said anorexics are typically trying to control their image becker said they have a wast ed look no muscle tone are often pale and have sunken eyes bulimia on the other hand is a disease based on shame insecurity and inadequacy she said this disease usually involves white females binge eating and then purging bulimics usually think they've lost con trol becker said they give in and binge and then feel guilty so they throw up they are caught in limbo to gain control also bulimics are usually within normal weight ranges in fact they may be slightly overweight these eating disorders force a woman's body to spend all energy on necessary func tions such as brain functions and breathing since reproduction is not a necessary function menstruation will cease women who have any thoughts of having children later on in life put dents in this thought if they develop amenorrhea becker said women need about 7 percent more body fat than men do in order to bear children according to becker the body realizes that it will be incapable of supporting another life the impact of this doesn't hit home until it actually happens or your issues change becker said everyone's issues change at some point she warned that amenorrhea occurs in two percent of the general population of women but in 40 percent of women athletes the final stage of the triad is osteoporosis amenorrhea causes it because this disease is directly correlated to the menstrual cycle the strength of a woman's bones depends on the number of periods she has in her life the fewer periods a woman has means bone weakening is worse in the long run becker said she said that female athletes are especially at risk of eating disorders because athletes nutrition consultant jennifer becker spoke tuesday about the female athlete triad a problem facing many women see eyelevel page a6 see athlete page 6 iiiiiiimffiiiii 1 1 1 n wi«m«__a
