1999 all the lehigh news first b w photo by la uren lustbader motivational speaker patrick combs talked to students on tuesday about the importance of reaching high for any goal and finding a career they enjoy major in success tells audiences to set goals by adrienne garber news writer motivational speaker patrick combs urged students to focus on their careers now to assure success in the future in a speech delivered tuesday in packard auditorium combs 32 is a motivational speaker tv personality author and entrepreneur he is touring college campuses and inspiring stu dents to become aggressive and active in pur suing their career goals he wants college stu dents to realize how completely reachable these hard-to-get jobs are combs's speech began with a computer presentation that contained various pictures of couples friends landscapes and other images followed by quotes from famous people such as confucius jean-jacques rousseau coco chanel and the greek philosopher sophocles even before combs opened his mouth the crowd was drawn in by the opportunity to bat around several beach balls that were tossed into the audience after a brief introduction by michelle watson assistant director of career services combs dove into the heart of his message do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life combs said he described his family background to give the audience a frame of reference combs came from a single parent family with a low income he was the first in his fam ily to attend college and had to work to pay his way through school his road was long and hard from the beginning he explained an old saying that his mother uses that he still applies to his life today that chances aren't given they're taken best four letter word to use when you're rejected is n-e-x-t combs said combs's anecdotes and light-hearted jokes eased the audience into serious topics he asked the audience to participate in a game that he had experienced in college he asked every one in the auditorium to stand up he described the game as a pre-interviewing process those that remained standing after a series of eliminating questions would receive tele phone interviews from the hypothetical dream job employer after about seven questions 31 students out of a packed auditorium remained standing combs asked questions such as have you participated in any internships or co-ops do you know how to make a spreadsheet do you head an organization on campus do you belong to a professional organization related to your major after the exercise combs offered from police late saturday night steven dorfman 01 and zachary tarum 00 called out to police from the third story of their fraternity house to alert them of the fugitive the man was running from the police after abandoning the car he had been riding in at the top of brodhead avenue at 1 1 30 p.m when the police got up to the lot we basi cally screamed out that he was under the car dorfman said police had chased the car along route 378 from lower saucon township on the other side of south mountain the vehicle was pursued by four police cars and went past the stop sign at the corner of brodhead avenue and summit street with out slowing proceeded to the end of brodhead and continued up the hillside a short distance the vehicle stopped and the occupants of the car jumped out and ran up the hillside the unoccupied car its motor apparently still run ning rolled back down the hillside toward police and came to rest in the ditch officers left their cars and proceeded to chase the flee ing persons on foot tarum was in his room when he heard sirens according to tarum he looked out and saw people running up the hill and over the guardrail below the fraternity's parking lot one person stopped near the last car in psi upsilon's lot tarum said it looked like the other person ran toward the trembley parking lot he then went to dorfman's room when the police got to the lot tarum and dorfman yelled to them from a window at first he stood behind the car dorfman said but when he saw the police were chasing him he rolled underneath it we yelled he's under the car he's under the car they just pulled him out from under the car and cuffed him tarum said at first he stood behind the car but when he saw the police were chasing him he roiled underneath it steven dorfman 01 99 when the car failed to stop police gave chase and followed the vehicle through bethlehem according to lower saucon township police the pursuit began saturday along route 378 northbound south of bethlehem in lower saucon township at approximately 1 1 07 p.m when police attempted to stop the vehicle for a traffic violation during the pursuit the vehicle ran another motorist off the road ran several red lights followed by a stop sign and forced police cruisers off the road almost striking them the man apprehended by police in the psi upsilon parking lot was identified by police as joseph eck 20 of north catasaqua pa eck jr a passenger in the vehi cle was charged with criminal con spiracy possession of marijuana and paraphernalia purchase pos session and consumption of alco hol aggravated assault and reckless ly endangering another person he was sent to the northampton county prison under 50,000 bail a warrant has been issued for the driver of the vehicle whom police identified as daniel faust 20 also of north catasaqua faust is accused of aggravated assault recklessly endangering another per son fleeing and eluding and numerous other violations see success page 6
