the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 106 no 28 tuesday february 2 1999 all the lehigh news first by debbie ludvigson news editor famous artwork on exhibit at zoellner members of the lehigh community have the opportunity to check out the artistic cre ations of the sculpter isamu noguchi in the zoellner arts center main gallery through march 14 the exhibit features akari light sculp tures by noguchi one of noguchi's most creative lamps is placed near the beginning of the exhibit its domino shape and massive size takes up a good part of the room and is a favorite of many who come to view noguchi's sculp ture exhibit the domino lamp struck me right away katie powers 01 said it is so dif ferent from anything i have seen noguchi was inspired to build his sculp tures after seeing the lanterns that illuminat ed the night in japan the japanese zen gar dens noh drama and the ancient haniwa sculptures also influenced noguchi to create akari light sculptures the light sculptures noguchi made are abstract formations of all shapes and sizes the sculptures range from hanging lamps to walls and ceiling lamps to table lamps and floor lamps the lights also range from a subtle intensity to a light bright enough to illuminate an entire room the art that noguchi presents is classi fied as contemporary however some of his work reaches such an ideal to that any art lover would appreciate his original style the exhibit is not large but it is fascinating and thought provoking some of the sculp tures are embedded in stones and others are even held up from the ceilings by rope akari is a type of art that forms a shape around the space around it tod williams and billy tsien are the architects that designed the display around the exhibit the display is a crucial portion of the exhibit because it enhances the effect of the exhibit and creates a maze-like setting from which to view the akari lamp designs faculty and staff at zoellner have been working hard to put this exhibit together and are enthusiastic about noguchi's art betsey pacini who is in charge of the volunteers at zoellner is also in charge of running the exhibit isamu noguchi's work was very popu lar in the 19505 and everyone copied his art pacini said everyone loved the lamps he did beautiful work and i am glad we can show it here noguchi was born in 1904 in los angeles calif he is the son of a japanese poet yonejro noguchi and the american writer leorie gilmour at age 2 he was taken to tokyo and at 13 he was sent back to the united states for schooling where formal bid day brings mixed feelings about rush by noelia cabrera news writer sorority and fraternity rush came to a close jan 27 when formal bids were hand ed out rush was a different process for the fra ternities and sororities rush started in the beginning of october for fraternities and ended just before all greek bid day however soror ity rush began on jan 19 and came to a close jan 26 men started visiting fraternity houses in the fall whereas women were not allowed to enter sorority houses until this semester several students explained what the rush process was like for them rushing was awesome because we had a long amount of time to get to know the guys and which fraternity was right for us arvind trindade 02 said other students were not so enthusiastic about the rush process and decided not to participate i didn't rush because i didn't want to be judged by a group of girls in less than an hour at a time tina randazzo 02 said i didn't think they could truly know who i am in that amount of time greek life is prominent at lehigh andt many students said they felt they had to rush in order to fit in with the crowd i would ve almost felt out of place if i didn't rush with all of my friends omar bakth 02 said now looking back i'm so glad i did it for other reasons i met an incredible amount of people that i most like ly would not have gotten to know other wise some students said they rushed because they wanted the experience of meeting new people on campus i was excited for rush even if i would n't get into the sorority i wanted kriti gwal 02 said the experience of talking to many people who are different yet get along so well with each other in their soror ity was great bid day was not exciting for everyone ing for everyone because of the large number of girls who rushed and the limited space in sorority houses not everyone received a bid rush also differed for men and women in the way their bids were distributed men had their bids waiting for them in their mail boxes at the ulrich student center at around 4 p.m for the women rho chi's from each hall distributed sorority bids to the womens rooms after 4p.m both men and women had the option of accepting their bids on bid day but could wait until tomorrow to make his or her final decision josh levine graduate student and rush chairman for the interfraternity council said that although rush is a great opportuni ty to meet other lehigh students both fresh men and upperclass it can also be a stress ful time for not only the rushee but also for the fraternity and sorority members earlier in the year he advised students to take their time and in deciding which of the houses is right for them because rush for the women is con densed into a short amount of time some rushees were relieved to have more free time once it ended after rush was over i had so much work to catch up on erin munley 02 said i didn't want to fall behind before making their decisions some people were confident they knew which house they could picture themselves in others were torn between two choices and found it more difficult to make a decision after rush i had such a difficult time choosing which house i wanted as my number one because both were so nice anne-marie barker 02 said i also didn't want to offend anyone but i learned that everything works out for the best in the end i was happy when i got my bid back because i knew i made the right choice barker said karen o'donnell 99 a rho chi said it's unfortunate that feelings get hurt in the process but i hope everyone realizes that in the end
