the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 106 no 27 friday january 29 1999 all the lehigh news first project impact task force sets goals by lisa a jones editor in chief eliminating the byob policy at frater nity parties revising tailgates and suspen sion for a semester for students who have two serious alcohol violations are among policy changes a project impact sub committee recommended to the administra tion wednesday the policy issues task force reviewed university alcohol policies and devised new policies in five identified areas for change which are aimed at significantly diminishing binge drinking among lehigh students project impact a coalition of staff students faculty and community leaders began addressing binge drinking in 1996 under the direction of vice provost for student affairs john smeaton it's clear that the status quo is not ok smeaton said we are not look ing for something that will change things overnight we're looking at a cult ural shift the task force said the university should increase non-alcohol social events individ ual accountability for alcohol-related viola tions and clarity as well as enforcement of campus alcohol policies it also recom mended to revise tailgate policies to reduce alcohol abuse and to work with the city of bethlehem to increase accountability for landlords david kapferer 00 is one of five stu dents on the 12-member task force this list represents what we think are the most important issues to be addressed he said kapferer said the recommendations are not a result of administrators attempting to eliminate partying on campus one of the most valuable parts of the committee was that the administrators had no more power or influence than the stu dents kapferer said the main objective of the policy recom mendations is to reduce excessive drinking he said i have no interest in seeing people throw up all over the place kapferer said task force member philip molter 99 said the group's goal is not to remove the party scene they're not unrealistic goals and they're certainly attainable molter said i'm sure students aren't going to be happy about it all the revised tailgate policy would mean no more than eight cases of beer or an equivalent quantity of wine could be pre sent at one tailgate gathering police would prohibit shotgunning funneling and other similar drinking behavior tailgate parties would be required to provide attractive and equally accessible food and alternate beverages if alcohol is provided the report said the sub-committee also suggested solution search continues for dean of business and economics by patty marckesano news writer a search for a new dean of the college of business and economics has been going on since september 1998 in september a committee was formed in order to start the search for the new dean the committee headed by roland yoshida dean of education consists of 1 1 members including four professors from cbe a professor of engineering a pro fessor of art and architecture a graduate student a graduate student working towards an mba a staff member of cbe and a trustee this committee however is not in charge of making the decision for the new dean they will recommend their choice to provost nelson markley and he will make the decision along with the committee lehigh has also hired an outside search firm heidrick-struggles to aid in finding the most qualified person for the job vice provost patti ota has been acting dean since the last permanent dean of the cbe james schmotter left lehigh about a year and a half ago though ota is new to the position she is not new to lehigh she has been at the university for 26 years and has held numerous leadership positions including associate professor assistant dean vice provost associate to the president and interim provost this is ota's first year as dean and she has set out with the mission of providing educational programs at both undergrad uate and graduate levels to prepare stu dents for the very competitive and com plex business world the committee and outside firm are not the only people who should be con cerned with the search it is important for the student body to also participate in the search yoshida said meetings with students and the candidates will be conducted so that the students have a chance to provide some feedback after all the curriculum and future growth for the cbe will ultimately be placed under leadership of the new dean he said he urges everyone at lehigh to get involved the extensive search is taking place because the position is such a vital one approximately one quarter of lehigh's undergraduates are enrolled in the cbe as well as about 1,800 graduates the dean provides academic leader ship for the 57 full-time faculty in cbe lehigh's cbe has a great history and continues to prove academically excellent according to a news release of the cbe 1997 undergraduate alumni 91 percent were placed in major companies with an average starting salary 11 per cent higher than the national average in addition a recent standard and poor's executive survey ranked lehigh in the top 20 of private universities in regard to the percentage of alumni who are executives of companies generating at least 1 million in sales or with at least 50 employees this means the new incoming dean has a great deal to be responsible for ideal guidelines for the candidate include possessing a clear vision strong commitment to both scholarship and teaching demonstration of leadership ability accomplishment in generating financial support strong commitment to foster innovative university-wide acade mic programs as well as an earned doctorate in one of the college's disci plines or significant professional business experience according to the news release the position will be available july 1 1999 and it is hopeful that a selection will be made on or before may 1 1999 nominations are welcome and appli
