the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 106 no 24 tuesday january 19 1999 all the lehigh news first beidler calls for risk in life by jennifer rauch editor in chief lehigh's 13th annual winter commencement went off without a hitch jan 10 as 424 students received undergraduate and advanced degrees at stabler athletic and convocation center the ceremony was the first graduation exercise for gregory c farrington lehigh's 12th president this is a joyful day a fulfilling day and i know it will be a very memorable day as well farrington said farrington told the graduates it is now their turn to do brilliant things such as creating teaching and being good parents sons and daughters he encouraged them to go out into the world but to remember bethlehem and where their education began you will always be welcome here and lehigh will always be one of your homes he said among the graduates were students from 26 states and 10 countries there were also 220 local residents who graduated peter g beidler the lucy g moses distinguished professor of english gave this year's commencement address in his address he talked to graduates about the importance of taking risks in order to create interesting life stories for themselves and he urged them to be the authors of their own lives beidler has been a member of the lehigh faculty since 1968 and has also received his m.a and ph.d from lehigh in addition beidler has authored 12 books and written 120 scholarly articles on various subjects he specializes in medieval british literature and con temporary native american literature beidler encouraged the graduates to not think of life as only a business because it could rob them of other things he urged them to come up with their own sim iles for life i challenge you at this important crossroads in your life to come up with a simile about what you think life is beidler said he suggested a couple of examples to the crowd life is like a painting beidler said it is colorful but has a limiting frame around it life is like a house beidler said if you don't have a good foundation the upper stories will get pretty shaky beidler also asked the graduates to think of a metaphor for who they are as people in control of their own lives the 1998 lehigh football team was a buffalo it just kept on charging he said he told the graduates to think of a metaphor based on the simile they choose for their life if you think your life is like a painting perhaps you are the artist of your own life he said beidler told the graduates that it is important not to settle for boring and predictable life stories it has always struck me as odd that we are content to live our lives in such a way that if our life was a novel we would be so bored with reading that novel that we would throw it away he said beidler said in a good story there must be risk some thing that goes wrong and something the main character must struggle through b w photo courtesy of external relations peter beidlcr lucy g moses distinguished professor of english spoke to 424 graduates at the winter commencement jan 10 at stabler arena proposed dual field game venue key • a grass field • b astro turf field • c stands and press box • d team rooms and living lab • e entrance and concessions • f entrance and concessions the astro turf field is the only component of the dual field game venue that is completed lehigh students were given the opportunity to help design the new goodman stadium complex which will include two new fields for lacrosse soccer and field hockey architectural design courtesy of brian baker 99 and charlie meyer 99 lehigh offers field work by brooke herman associate editor eleven students learned to apply the classroom to the real world last semester when they were asked to design the new stadium complex on goodman campus the project still in progress is the marriage of master minds of several majors offered at lehigh these students chosen from the three colleges are representatives from the accounting marketing economics civil and industrial engi neering and art and architecture departments expansion was a project the school was required to embark on as part of its ncaa self study report this report showed a drastic need to improve the soccer lacrosse and field hockey fields a natural grass field will be built as the primary play ing surface for lacrosse and soccer field hockey will only be played on the astro turf field in case of bad weather all three sports can be played on the artificial surface see beidler page 6 see stadium page 7 bmffibbbh-i i i m-mflffwßßi w_____t_£__3___b h_s_____h quick ran the wrestling team board of trustees severe water rvo i f defeated north approves tuition shortages pollution fll*bjp p''^th carolinastate33 -
