brown and white vol 106 no 20 tuesday november 17 1998 all the lehigh news first open house attracts record number of students by nick mathers news writer more than 1,000 high school seniors and their parents visited lehigh on thursday and friday for the annual fall open house making this year's program the largest and most successful ever lisa dubreuil senior assistant director of admissions said approximately 400 people attended the program thursday and nearly 600 friday the open house keeps getting bigger and bigger every year dubreuil said it shows that lehigh's name is real ly getting out there the prospective students and their parents were invited by the admissions department to attend the one-day pro gram on either day dubreuil said there was a big turn out this year because the open house fell on veteran's day and a lot of high schools were closed the open house is different from a regular tour program because there is more for a prospective to do than just take a tour dubreuil said the students came with their parents to an information session m the zoellner arts center m the morning there deans from the different colleges spoke as well as repre sentatives from financial aid and admissions offices jason honsel associate director of admissions said the open house gives you an opportunity to get a closer look at lehigh brian pilecki 00 a student ambassador said other top ics of discussion at the information session were the study abroad program and the graduate school at lehigh the open house also offered high school seniors the - : b&w photo by scott reynolds high school seniors and their parents were given the opportunity to tour lehigh's campus during the biggest fall open house on thursday and friday over 1,000 students and parents participated m the two day event open-minded crowd welcomes illusionist by noelia cabrera news writer robert charming the world's greatest illusionist mystified students m the ulrich student center saturday night megan stensrud 02 was astonished by channing's performance he was amazing stensrud said before seeing charming i never believed m e.s.p but now my thoughts on the sixth sense have been forever altered in his mysteries of the mind perfor mance charming engaged m various activ ities related to reading people's minds including predicting how much money was m someone's jeans pockets he also took two volunteers from the audience and made them each pick up three objects by then rubbing these various objects such as a false teeth key chain on his head while concentrating he was able to identify them all without seeing them at one point m the act a dollar bill was taken from student todd vazquez 02 and given to charming while he was blindfolded later on m the show charming picked out several people from the audience whom he thought the bill could have belonged to and then determined the owner of the bill to be vazquez he was also able to tell the exact serial number of the bill i thought it was pretty cool how out of all the people m the audience he was able to know that the dollar bill was mine vazquez resolution focuses on climbing up the ranks by philip adelman news writer the board of trustees has defined a cri teria aimed at boosting lehigh into the top 25 universities m the nation m the next five to 10 years according to president gregory c farrington among the most important attribut es of this plan include a dedication to ensure that only the finest faculty candidates are hired and that tenured faculty are passionate about their craft also included m this desire for preemi nence is a continued commitment to acade mic excellence as well as a dedication to recruiting the finest freshmen m the nation as well as abroad lehigh has retained stillwater associates consultants m higher education to evaluate the administrative structure and determine how it measures up to other top ranked universities upon the completion of this evaluation the data will be used to see how lehigh can be improved while at the same time becoming more unique m relation to some of its toughest competitors however contrary to simply measuring up to other highly regarded institutions lehigh aims to emerge as a leader among universities nelson g markley provost is confident lehigh will be able to achieve its goals this university has enormous potential markley said we want to move m a direction to ensure lehigh's success and compete on a see house page 4 see channing page 4 see trustee page 4 jm^ijiwwfri 1 1 1 1 iiiiihi lirnnnrh weghsssbosm ouial ] the football team the martindale the function of media i ih !
