lehigh students roared their approval from the stands and after the final gun barked swarmed onto the field they marched out of the stadium ac companied by the band wended their way down to the south side business section and halted the time was 4:28 it was saturday afternoon nov 6 the place was taylor stadium on the lehigh campus ten thou sand fans poured from the sta dium exits some were happy some were sad they had just watched an inspired lehigh fooball machine battle to a 35 20 win over the muhlenberg mules the mule was a mean kick ing animal but proved to be no match for the victory bound brown and white dick gabriel chalked up two traffic for almost a half-hour cheerleaders climbed up on street signs and directed cheers celebrations lasted on into the night it was an impressive vic tory over a bitter rival muhl enberg had been downed for the first time in six years and stored up emotions broke loose directly after the game a fracas started in front of the dressing room entrance an un identified muhlenberg player swung at tom dimmig lehigh's sophomore guard tempers flared but three lehigh men held the aroused dimmig back and order was restored lehigh went into the lead with the game but four minutes old diz dean mule signal caller punted on fourth down from the lehigh 47 jim noel senior halfback took the punt on the 10 he started to his left to ward the south sideline stopped dead in his tracks as two mule men dove at him and missed noel then reversed his field and started toward the oppo site side of the field lehigh's blocking worked with scythe like precision as noel started off on his 90 yard touchdown jaunt the 165-lb back slowed down at the mule 30 and dick doyne cut the fast moving russ strait down with a perfect block as strait moved in for the tackle bernie rosen made the first of his five placements and lehigh led 7-0 muhlenberg retaliated quickly marty binder brought mike murray's kickoff back 65 yards to the lehigh 20 where he was brought down from behind by dan murphy strait drove up the middle to the lehigh university brown and white dimmig squeezes tuesday november 9 1948 bethlehem pa vol xviii no 11 lu - lafayette ticket sale will commence nov 15 priorities are assigned beaver quail here saturday girls of the beaver college glee club will be welcomed at the university on nov 13 when they will be escorted to the le high - carnegie tech football game as guests of the univer sity glee club following the game they will be taken to din ner and then to the combined charities dance in grace hall the annual affair will be highlighted by a concert pre sented by the young ladies in packer memorial church at 8:00 p.m the dance will be from 9 to 12 the collegians will pro vide music anyone desiring to date one of the girls for this occasion should sign up in the band room at grace hall chaplain bean urges chest fund support local coeds to solicit beat the tartans there will be a pep rally friday night in front of drinker house at 7:30 in case of rain the rally will be held in grace hall student tickets to the lehigh laf ayette football game on nov 20 at easton will go on sale monday morning nov 15 all living groups including the town group have been assigned priorities according to a lottery conducted by the seating plans committee of arcadia hours have been assigned for nov 15 during which the groups must pick up their tickets these pickup hours have been posted the committee recommends that living groups send one representative to the athletic office at their scheduled time to purchase student tickets the representative sent should have the activity book of each mem ber of his group who wants a ticket the cost of a ticket is 1.50 plus the student activity coupon lehigh has been given the north side of the lafayette sta dium consisting of 4,900 seats of this number 2,800 are going to students the smaller sec tion goes to the alumni and others a married student can pur chase a ticket for his wife on wednesday morning from 9 to 12 unmarried students can pur chase guest tickets on wednes day afternoon from 2 to 5 pm there is a limit of three guest tickets per student the price for guest tickets and tickets for wives is 3.00 under the present system town men are divided into 25 groups these groups are placed in the lottery along with the other living groups a total of 86 cards were entered in the lottery after the lottery all town cards were placed in one group the tickets allocated to the group represented the priorities drawn in the lottery the athletic department is trying to obtain tickets from lafayette to help accommodate more lehigh rooters and guests jazz is no lady-sideris b&w critic raps artists for tactless boogie beat boogie never found a more receptive audience than the capacity crowd which filled grace hall friday night to hear the four piano ensemble for eighty minutes 2.000 lis teners sat attentively through a program of well-chosen class ics midway through rimsky korsakoff's the flight of the bumble bee arranger stephen kovacs trundled a powerful hand over the left side of the keyboard a wave of excitement whip ped over the crowd it had caught kovacs bass tempo the ensemble had assured itself a successful evening sensing the mood of its listeners the four pianists responded with john son's broadway and 42nd street with the last few notes of the johnson opus went the ves tiges of the audience's early decorum the quartet had lost control over its listeners a boogie encore followed there was whistling shouting and stamping of feet within the space of a few minutes the re cital had assumed a ridiculous pose with much further ado on the part of the now mob-like audience the four performers managed to return to the pro gram that they ever should have strayed to such an ex treme may have rendered them admirable to the majority of listeners to this critic they appeared slightly foolish this writer is not a classics untouchable boogie is appeal ing and exciting it certainly stirs the emotions but it be longs in a smoke-filled room with a battered upright its quality is purely atmospheric the pianists concluded their program with an opus from enesco's melodic rou manian rhapsody immedi ately they were accorded a thunderous ovation they en cored appropriately with a cho pin nocturne chopin must have shuddered coldly when the four performers followed with the beer barrel year's lehigh charity drive was a failure as it contributed only 136 to the world student serv ice fund 40 per cent of the campus chest campaign muhlenberg students gave 500 alleghany 2,000 and ced ar crest more than twice the amount donated by lehigh stu dents bill brennan 49 secretary of arcadia who presided at the pep rally for the charity drive also introduced dean seidle the dean asked representatives to convince their fellow stu dents of the need for their help in giving up a few movies and a few beers each student should be able to contribute the 2 needed to boost lehigh over the 6,000 goal dean seidle pointed out that this amount amounted to only 1 cent per day during the school year brennan explained that all who contribute more than 1 will be given red feathers to wear when worn these feath ers will induce other students to join the charity drive alvord beardslee has prepared a large chart that will be placed by the library entrance to record the progress of the drive and indicate the percentage of men contributing from each living collect 2 from every le high student urged chaplain bean as he spoke to living group representatives for the campus chest drive last friday after noon as former lehigh delegate to the middle atlantic world stu dent service organization chap lain bean stressed the import ance of aiding 400,000 students of the world in need of food clothing medical care and text books he particularly empha sized that fortunate lehigh stu dents with few wants should help college men in foreign countries who are without the facilities for learning last lafayette gets it next lehigh mauls mules more touchdowns on his scor ing string joe scannella dick doyne and jim noel also cross ed the payoff stripe as lehigh's attack functioned smoothly the educated right foot of bernie rosen sent five consecutive placements spinning through the uprights
