the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 106 no 13 friday october 23 1998 all the lehigh news first mortgage deal assembled for faculty and staff by jennifer everett editor in chief first union creates incentives to encourage lehigh employees to buy off-campus houses soon lehigh students may be learning and living in the company of lehigh faculty and staff as partners the university and first union bank announced a home mortgage program tuesday to lure lehigh employees into the south side bethlehem community as residents there are three mortgage programs available to help the 1,335 eligible applicants with financing and improving and maintaining homes on the south side we are very grateful to lehigh university and first union for taking a leadership role on this issue mayor don cunningham said this is something the bank and the uni versity are doing for the community the three packages being offered will include a contribu tion of 1 percent of the mortgage from lehigh the program applies to full-time employees when pur chasing or renovating existing single-family homes in the area from the lehigh river on the north to route 378 and wyandotte street on the west to mountain drive west on the south and east bth street and lynn avenue on the east the package programs are as follows • a primary partnership package which extends employ ees 1 percent of the mortgage cost from the university and can be used for expenses such as closing costs taxes and repairs additionally this package offers mortgages with minimal closing costs • a standard mortgage option where employees can nego tiate mortgage points and interest with first union waiving one point from their normal fee schedule this package also includes the 1 percent contribution from lehigh • a renovation option that allows buyers to obtain loans greater than the home's market value the additional funds can be used to renovate the home being purchased cunningham said these plans should be especially helpful to first-time home buyers when we go to buy a house it is often the up-front cost that is a hurdle he said this program focuses on these issues scott fainor president of first union said lehigh is a leader in the community making this a wonderful opportuni ty for improvement and a project he is proud to be part of this will create excitement enthusiasm and a community better than what we already have fainor said the south side task force led by bob thompson is also supporting the program he applauded both the program and the process as a whole thanks to project impact we have been working since 1996 to address civic problems he said the university has set a goal to attract five to 10 pur chasers per year however rhonda gross vice president for finance and administration said the program will be considered a success if it results in even just one employ ee utilizing the program and purchasing a home on the south side programs similar to this one where lenders and educa tors have teamed up to enhance troubled neighborhoods photo courtesy of pam shealey first union president scott fainor praises the implementation of the new home mortgage program aimed at lehigh faculty and staff the plan is to encourage them to purchase and renovate south side off-campus houses women seek political equality by keith roberts news writer a panel of local female politi cians shared their personal experi ences in rising to where they are today at a forum held tuesday in maginnes hall the panel discussion women in politics challenges and contributions featured lisa boscola state house representative d-135 and current can didate for the state senate barbara flanagan candidate for bethlehem city council in the last election janice h mcelroy d-15 candidate from the 15th congressional district seat in the last primary and jean belinski presently a member on the bethlehem city council moderated by laura katz olson professor of political science the women touched upon a variety of issues that affect women who seek to enter the political arena flanagan began the forum expressing her opposition to the stereotypical female position in the household women just don't crave power -
