the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 106 no 10 tuesday october 6 1998 am the lehigh news first ifc rushes toward freshmen by amanda henry news writer representatives from the interfraternity council and from each fraternity offered freshmen males information and encouragement about the rush process at the fraternity rush convocation oct 1 . each of the 28 fraternities set up a table in the asa packer dining room allowing freshmen to talk to fra ternity brothers ryan faulkingham 99 ifc president began by introducing the council as the governing and representa tive body for all fraternities at lehigh josh levine 98 ifc rush chairman explained the two reasons for attending college are to prepare for the real world and to have fun a fraternity offers the best of both worlds in order to get the most out of the college experience accord ing to levine the more people you know the more resources you have he said fraternities offer you the chance to learn have fun and meet as many people as possible when you take advantage of that network you will have so many options levine said levine compared fraternities to companies using alumni to represent national stockholders and emphasiz ing common goals such as community service involve ment and maintaining a good reputation v he emphasized the necessity of social skills in every job market being in a fraternity will allow you the opportunity to be able to communicate with anyone levine said the four best things about befhg in the greek system are rush greek week various social functions sponsored by the ifc and panhellenic councils and tailgates i am surprised that being in the greek system isn't required because of the positive life experience you get from being a part of it he said levine urged freshmen not to miss out on rush because of the experience it offers it's never too late levine said don't make a big mis take and lose out on all the great things you could be doing it's my responsibility to recruit and i will do every thing to make sure you are satisfied with the rush process levine concluded by telling the freshman that if they do not intend to pledge they should rush anyway because they will meet people and be able to keep those b w photo by cori zacharius dr gordon feldman spoke about competition in his lecture rambo and the dalai lama on oct 1 ' speed the plow digs up praise by jennifer keenan news writer the theatre department explored the issue of deceit and struggle in its production speed the plow directed by augustine ripa professor of theatre the play opened oct 1 in the diamond theater at zoellner arts center the main theme of the play illustrates the characters struggles to advance in life while competing with each other to do so an element that helped to attract ripa to the production the world of this play is one of incredibly hot and harsh competition ripa said not just competition for commerce but competition for human feelings dominance and control the play has three main characters dan gibbs 00 plays bobby gould the newly promoted studio executive greg scot mihalik 99 plays charlie fox the man who is forever riding on gould's coattails and b&w photo by andrea pope summer harling 99 middle madelyn rodriguez ( i ) and dj yaseen enjoy themselves at the warren square block party held sunday the event was originally scheduled to be in the parking lot but was held in the old wellness house due to the rain see plow page 7 see ifc page 7 one inch of rain contains the same amount of water as 10 inches of snow source http://www.jayi.com/cgi bin/archives.pl?l o+97 breast cancer advocates demand top priority research see page 9 science 9-11 science briefs 1 1 parking services clarifies rules and regulations see page 4 news 1-7 comedian 4 hillel society 5 indian festival 6
