the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 46 tuesday may 5 1998 all the lehigh news first blood donated to local hospitals by nick mathers news writer miller memorial blood center sets up at ulrich to attract donors blood was donated by students at a blood drive hosted by miller memorial blood center friday in ulrich student center gertrude o'donnell a nurse at the cen ter organized the event all of the donors are volunteers that want to donate for the community o'donnell said over 40,000 units of blood are used daily most of the donors were giving blood for the first time she said something came over me and i wanted to help chuck evans 00 a first time donor said blood donors must pass specific guide lines in order to donate blood they must be at least 17-years-old weigh a minimum of 1 10 pounds and be in good health on the day of donation potential donors also must not have had any skin pierced or received a tattoo 12 months prior to donating blood bouts of hepatitis after the age of 10 and injected narcotic and nonprescribed drug use prohibits blood donation people who are at high risk of con tracting the aids virus are advised not to donate blood all donors are required to complete a private screening process before they can give blood general information and proof of age is requested at registration before the actual screening begins potential donors are pricked in the fin ger so that their blood can be tested erica pasatieri 00 was willing but was unable to donate blood i wasn't allowed to do it because my iron count was too low which is a common occurrence pasatieri said temperature pulse and blood pressure are also measured the person is also required to answer a series of questions pertaining to behavior and lifestyle the process of the donation lasts no more than 10 minutes including prepa ration and the seven minute blood extraction period the needle is then properly discarded so there is no chance of a donor contracting aids or any other communicable disease after the extraction is finished the donors are taken to a refreshment area to rest and replenish their blood sugar and bodily fluids donors are eligible to donate again after eight weeks i almost passed out and i thought i was going to throw up evans said but all the helpers were nice and the cookies were good all of the blood is tested for hiv hepatitis b and c and syphilis as well as other diseases before it is given to any hospitals blood typing and cholesterol testing are also done on each pint of blood all of the blood is processed at the miller blood center and then sent out to hospitals in the lehigh valley area o'donnell said according to guidelines for first time donors the pamphlet distributed by miller memorial over half of the united states population is eligible to donate blood but less than five percent actually do suspect in recent wallet thefts apprehended by rebekah berry news writer campus police have arrested an individual who may be responsible for the recent increase in thefts on campus the suspect is not a lehigh student faculty or staff member police said nearly 900 has been taken from students faculty and staff members in the past five weeks wallets purses and book bags were taken from several acad emic buildings on campus including rauch business center drown hall seeley g mudd hall sinclair laboratory e.w fairchild-martindale library and the university center according to eugene j dax director of campus police the thief would watch an area for awhile and see where the wallet was being kept and then wait for an opportunity to grab it he has been looking for opportunities and because people have been leaving things unattended the opportunities have always been there dax said according to dax leaving wallets purses book bags and briefcases unattended seems to be the biggest attraction to thieves many of the recent cases involved students leaving book bags in public areas while they went to a nearby room to talk to friends or go to class dax said several items were also taken from private offices left unlocked for short periods of time b&w photo by jen affects on society were discussed by mark edmundson professor of english at the university of virginia april 27 in maginnes hall edmundson said a capitalist culture where the notions of being hip and cool are advertised as the most desirable success es in life produces mass apathetic ideology found most ripe in youth according to edmundson this attitude causes students today to lack curiosity and passion toward learning as teachers we have to come to terms with the fact that advertising in consumer culture infiltrates our students lives to a degree never before seen in western culture
