the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 45 friday may 1 1998 all the lehigh news first deceased student commemorated by janine gallo news writer a memorial of flowers benches and a rock with a plaque for deceased freshman allyson r shumway was recently completed in the centennial ii quad always remember to smile but never forget to cry reads the quote inscribed on the memorial plaque shumway died last semester due to com plications associated with viral meningitis she lived in palmer house in lower centennial the idea for the memorial came from the gryphons and house council of lower centennial according to nicole kotlan residence life coordinator it seemed to be very supported by every one kotlan said house council wanted to get involved and so did student senate kotlan said david joseph director of residential services was instrumental in making the memorial a reality he came to dining services with ideas for funding and took the steps needed to actually construct the memorial the memorial was funded by a drive for earth day students were asked to give up their lunch for a day and the money raised was used for the beautification of the quad in honor of shumway the reaction to the memorial is one of great appreciation kotlan said the memori al contributes greatly to the atmosphere of lower centennial it adds to lower centennials kotlan said it brings a smile to everyone's faces when they sit there allyson will always be a part of lehigh residents of lower centennial seem to enjoy the memorial one of shumway's hallmates edra steinberg 01 said the memorial exemplifies the impact shumway has had on so many people i think it's great that the memorial is down there steinberg said it's beauti ful she made a humongous impact on our lives even though we knew her for such a short time nicole fiumefreddo 01 said the memorial embodies the qualities people remember about shumway the memorial with the flowers and the bench is student-produced production of the hit show godspell sold out the diamond theater at zoellner arts center for all of its performances april 24 through yesterday elisa gaeta 99 is a member of the show's cast the best thing about the show is that it's just so fun and every performance is dif ferent gaeta said godspell is a musical comedy that retells bible stories in a contemporary fashion uti lizing slapstick comedy colorful costumes and jazzy musical accompaniment gaeta played herself in the musical as did the other actors and actresses going by their real names in the performance however in order to retell the life story of jesus christ and his teachings many of the actors took on different roles for short times during the show such as noah seductresses embittered siblings and the traitor judas the play was directed by donna cennemano 98 a veteran of the lehigh stage who has been involved in seven major lehigh productions it's such a fun show that it's easy to want to watch everything because there is so much going on she said there are so many colorful personalities onstage throughout the musical the audience was treated to various types of humor while being told the story of jesus christ one of the challenges was remember ing the simplicity behind it cennemano said it's easy to get caught up in every thing that was going on just going over each parable and what it meant the logic of it and conveying that simple message was at times difficult cennemano cites the skill of the cast as vital to the show's success i was lucky to get 10 extraordinary free and bold actors she said we just had fun with the script and everything that came to their minds we tried using if it worked it stayed if it didn't we found something else throughout the performance the actors imitated many contemporary pop figures including the spice girls and jerry springer pete gustavson 99 did michael jackson's moonwalk at times cast members involved the audience with the performance several times actors jen wescoe 98 courtney marshall 00 and dan gibbs 00 would walk up and down the aisles clapping their hands singing and gesturing musicians show off their skill by nick mathers news writer months of private lessons ensemble rehearsals and individual practice paid off when students performed their solos and small ensembles at zoellner arts center's noon recitals this week the pieces performed ranged from the baroque and classical eras with works written by famous composers including bach mozart haydn and beethoven through modern pieces including songs by george gershwin and duke ellington an arrangement of funky rock group jamiroquai's a stillness in time and an original solo written and performed by dan forman 99 were highlights of the recitals each student had approximately 10 min utes to perform forman put many hours of preparation into his program i was a little nervous never having sung or performed a solo in public before forman said sue glod 01 was impressed by the level of virtuosity displayed i really enjoyed the recitals she said they are a great way for people to show case their individual talents kate lewis 00 found the recitals a welcome addition to campus performances it's really great to get some culture here at lehigh she said in order to be included in the program students had to be recommended by music professors the program was organized to place less experienced musicians first and build toward more advanced performers the musicians enjoyed the opportunity to perform in the recitals as well as observe the performances of other music students it's good to be able to see your friends and peers performing what they have been working so hard for forman said paul salerni professor of music believes the recitals help students feel com fortable performing onstage the recitals give wonderful experience to students who do not normally play in public salerni said they can perform in a non-threatening atmosphere and it
