the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 44 tuesday april 28 1998 all the lehigh news first pike dream girl showcases various talents by alison reemer news writer baton twirling hip swiveling and vocal stylings were showcased wednesday night as eight sorority women competed for the title of pike dream girl at lower grace hall pi kappa alpha fraternity's annual con test is a national tradition that benefits the american red cross the contest consisted of three prelimi nary rounds which included formal wear beach wear and talent competitions the final round included a physical challenge and a question and answer period each sorority contributed an entrance fee for its contestant local sponsors of the event included anna mia's restaurant new street bridgeworks restaurant and deja brew coffee house pike's newly initiated members played an important role in the planning of the contest we had to find contestants raise money and buy stuff for the set and stage peter berko 00 said the contestants also put much prepa ration into the success of the event each woman needed to rehearse and then perform a talent me and my friend went to kaybce toy store and while walking through the aisles we spotted a hula-hoop shannon carey 01 alpha chi omega's representative explained it brought back memories of my childhood and what a good hula-hooper i was so i decided that i should do that for my talent jenn reinert 00 kappa alpha theta's representative twirled a flaming baton for the audience's enjoyment it is a once in a lifetime thing i am just hoping that i don't set the gym on fire because i am throwing fire batons reinert said my sorority picked my talent for me because they knew that i could do it and had done it in the past if i could do it 10 years ago then i can do it now while the contestants enjoyed the entire evening they were most enthused about the talent competition i am most excited about our talent act it is a singing routine and i am in choir so i really do love to sing said lynn busearini 01 the representative from alpha gamma delta each contestant was escorted to the stage by either a brother in pike or a selected member of the audience adam montalbano 00 appreciated the opportunity to participate as an escort dream girl is a fun time for the house and all the houses on campus both male and female during greek week it is also for a good cause raising money for charity at the same time montalbano said this year's winner was jill harmelin 00 from alpha phi sorority harmelin performed celine dion's theme from the movie titanic and won a gift certificate to victoria's secret second place went to laura kirk 01 from pi beta phi sorority who lip synced to shoop by salt n pepa third place went to stephanie bailer 01 from alpha omicron pi sorority who sang fever by peggy lee students who attended pike dream girl ba w photo by kim carville alpha chi omega contestant shannon carey 01 displays her hula-hoop talent bazaar displays world cultures by jordan guttman news writer students and faculty were able to learn about different cultures first hand at the 11th annual international bazaar which was organized by the office of international education and held in the ulricii student center sunday the event was run by gisela nansteel immigration spe cialist from the office of international education the international bazaar brings an international dimen sion to lehigh's campus nansteel said it gives the inter national and american students a chance to come together as one international students experience our world everyday now we can experience their culture interim president william c hittinger 44 opened the festivities with a speech in past years the event has been held outside maginnes hall and the university center however because of the bad weather it was held inside considering the location of the event the turnout was pretty successful nansteel said alysia decker graduate assistant of the office of b w photo by danielle frikker members of the indian student association dance and display their ethnic clothing at the international bazaar see pike page 6 see bazaar page 6 kutjt rr-alltci ittrtts e m w*#uu3 / !. ■* » r ... -••> * >" h_________bb___h ihb_h_hlb_rbah-nhh-hi hh_-_-ii_l-im-i-m-^----tf-h___l ui c'»«i h men's lacrosse team centennial school sleep deprivation has loses to colgate holds race to benefit many negative university in overtime emotionally disturbed effects see page 7 the poison-ar row frog liz brodbeck 12 world news briefs 2 science briefs 9 . source strange but true web page baseball 16 pie eating contest 5 http/www.sbt.bhmedia.com
