removed the student newspaper the muhlenberg weekly from the college web site following the publication of several critical articles it is our feeling that the administration didn't like the paper online because it was bad public relations for the web site brian keta associate editor for the weekly said the administration told editor in chief larry carney that it was also the inconsistent voice of the editorial staff that displeased them carney had directed his staff to cover stories about such issues as date rape on campus and the drug rohypnol as well as the allentown zoning law that aims to restrict the number of students living in the neighborhood surrounding muhlenberg the college administrators call us muckrakers carney said there are a lot of stories that go on here that no one knows about because the administration keeps them quiet we just want to be read the administration claims the weekly which had been online since september never received approval from the college's year we had an editor who was more public relations-focused he would literally just print stories written by the public relations department so officials had no reason to fear bruckner said many people visit the web site and accurate information is necessary for the public relations of the college we want the right messages sent out bruckner said more and more the first impression prospective students get of muhlenberg is from the web site according to bruckner the web site records a couple of hundred hits per week from off-campus users he believes most of these are prospective students trying to leam some thing about the college before applying both keta and carney said because the college owns the web site the actions taken by the college are not violating their first amendment rights by denying them freedom of speech however they do feel they were treated unfairly it's not censorship because it wasn't our right to be on their web site keta said we were just providing a courtesy for them it was the process that was upsetting the most carney said we were online for a long time and then one day we woke up and we were gone we had no warning it was like a train came through at mid night and took it away from us we were never even told that they had done that he said according to carney an adviser heard in passing that the weekly had been removed and he immediately relayed the news to the publication's editors the current weekly editorial staff is not trying to get the paper back on the web site by taking the usual administra tion pathway they have decided instead to go past the administration and deal with outside sources shortly after the morning call ran the story about us a former editor who works for a local computer company called us and told us he would help put us back online carney said carney said aaron white who was editor in chief of the weekly in 1991 agreed to set up the paper on its own server outside of the col lege in return for free advertising white told carney that he wants to help the weekly because he thinks the paper has become a pr rag since he left carney plans to act on white's offer see protest page 7
