the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 40 tuesday april 7 1998 all the lehigh news first cadets face challenges at weekend training by patrick doherty managing editor members of the rotc program learned tactics and leadership skills during training exercises at fort dix n.j last weekend the exercise began thursday with a march to sayre field where the cadets were met by three ch-47 helicopters or chinooks according to capt steve nott the commanding officer for the weekend's exercises the chinook is the largest heli copter in the u s army and the second largest in the entire u.s military after receiving a safety briefing the cadets boarded the helicopters for a flight to fort dix upon arrival the cadets con ducted a night movement from the landing zone to a pre-designated assembly area during night movement the platoon leader must remain aware of where the platoon is and where it is going even for experienced soldiers movement by night is extremely difficult according to nott during the day in wooded terrain you can move about three kilometers an hour nott said during the night it drops down to about one kilometer an hour for experi enced soldiers i expect these guys to make about six or seven hundred meters an hour due to dust generated by the landing of the first helicopter the second and third were forced to land at the alternate site this created a further complication because the two units were forced to link up at night another difficulty during night move ment is ensuring that everyone remains with the unit especially when crossing areas such as roads where an enemy ambush is likely frequent checks are nec essary and these must be taken while the unit remains on the move accountability is a real problem during night movement nott said you have to make sure everyone stays together after several hours of movement the two units were able to locate and occupy the previously planned assembly area where watches were established much of the remainder of the weekend was spent on tactical exercises on friday a group of cadets consisting mostly of juniors were required to conduct a frontal assault on a position held mostly by fresh men and sophomores led by seniors the assault team received the location of an enemy position and orders to move to and occupy it when the assault team arrived after several hours of moving through the woods a reconnaissance team determined that the defense team had occupied several foxholes which the attackers were able to use to their advantage army doctrine roll into stabler for show by douglas j hyrb news writer members of the greater lehigh valley automobile dealers association glvada hosted their first automobile show at stabler arena and rauch fieldhouse this weekend the show consisted of new 1998 and 1999 model cars displayed across 80,000 square feet the models were displayed by 25 manufactur ers both domestic and foreign joe straub co-chairman of the auto show committee was overwhelmed by the success of the show it is the largest indoor automotive marketing event in the area straub said the festivities began thursday evening with a vip reception for all local dealer ship owners and invited guests the show was then opened to the public friday through sunday harte communications produced and directed the show for glvada they pre dicted more than 10,000 peo ple would attend the show stephanie o'keeffe media relations director of harte communications assumed that many residents from the com munity would turn out we expect that the local people will get a big kick out of this show because nothing like this has been here before o'keeffe said this was the lehigh valley's first auto show it was also the first event spon sored by glvada a recently formed organization made up of various dealership owners from allentown easton and bethlehem john daub president of brown daub inc and chair man of the event was amazed
