the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 39 friday april 3 1998 all the lehigh news first former security advisor looks toward the future by jordan guttman news writer former national security advisor anthony lake took an optimistic view of united states foreign pol icy tuesday in baker hall during his speech entitled the dangers and opportunities for the united states in the post-cold war era i am an optimist about the future the economy is in great shape and the cold war is over he said the speech was the 12th annual installment of the cohen international relations lecture series lake served as advisor to president bill clinton from 1993 to 1996 during this period clinton referred to him as the point man of our foreign pol icy team clinton said in moments of crisis in times of triumph he was always at my side the tone of lake's speech was upbeat lake dis cussed u.s military economic and cultural power not only does the united states have a great deal of power he said but the power it has is more than just brute strength culturally we are very strong as well lake emphasized our culture has great appeal it has individualism creativity and innovation lake was positive about the current state of for eign policy he said the end of the cold war and the uniquely dominant position of the united states on the world stage give cause for hope it is a good time because we have a world of opportunities lake said although things are looking up lake empha sized there are still problems on the horizon lake discussed how he is concerned about russia because of the threat posed by its nuclear weapons he is strongly in favor of expanding nato to include the former eastern bloc countries and was one of the chief architects of the policy lake said the world is more interconnected than ever before and that this trend will continue according to lake the best american jobs come from exports and many changes come from expand ing trade with other countries lake said there are also negative effects of globalization because of the threat it poses to national governments one example he gave was of goods that are starting to move across national boarders too quickly fewer than five percent of goods coming into this country are inspected by customs lake said i don't tell you this so that you will take advantage of it lake lake former national security advisor to president clinton delivered the 12th annual cohen lecture tuesday night students spend morning with cohen lecturer by natalie cantor news editor to complement the speech he delivered tuesday former national security advisor anthony lake ate breakfast with a group of students wednesday morning in the tower room of lacocca hall members of the world affairs club as well as college scholars were invited to attend the break fast which gave students the chance to talk to lake informally although 20 students were scheduled to attend the breakfast only 11 attended lake sat at a table with stu dents and fielded questions dis cussing united states foreign pol icy issues dealing with countries all over the world including russia israel and taiwan one of the issues lake feels most strongly about is the need to enlarge nato to include russia and eventually other countries which were not previously involved i think it's the right policy by heather ignall assistant news editor alumnus murdered on the job lehigh alumnus and chi phi fraternity brother david bradley 92 died march 23 after a dis gruntled employee opened fire at the chemical plant in california where bradley was employed the employee killed bradley another employee and then himself bradley 28 was working at general chemical richmond works facility he worked with dale laughlin 49 another supervisor according to the san jose mercury news laughlin had sus pended an employee edilberto l sangco 55 for five days for vio lating plant policies sangco who had a history of disciplinary problems arrived in the plant cafeteria shortly before 10 a.m just days after serving his suspension he was carrying a loaded semi-automatic weapon without a word he opened fire hitting bradley and laughlin in the chest sangco then walked about 75 feet away and shot him self in the head police and wit nesses said paramedics arrived within min utes of the shooting and worked on saving the men for more than 20 minutes before they were able to rush them to local hospitals laughlin of pinole calif and bradley of san francisco died about 30 minutes after arrival at doctors medical center in san pablo sangco died about two hours after being flown to john muir medical center in walnut creek calif investigators suspect sangco an eight-year employee of the plant was angry about the suspen sion he had received from laughlin the week before valerie gray the refinery's environmental safety officer said sangco was reprimanded the week before for not following opera tional procedures joseph gothie 94 lived in the chi phi house with bradley for two years one thing i remember about him was his enthusiasm gothie said he had a work hard play hard ethic marybeth hanley 98 was an intern at the plant last summer and bradley was her mentor he was an incredible boss he was the greatest person i could have worked under hanley said he taught me more in three months than i could learn in a year
