faculty meeting the regular fall meeting of the faculty of the college of arts and sciences will be held on thursday november 11 at 4:10 p.m in room 1 cop pee hall at this meeting there will be passed upon all changes in courses which are to go into the register so that they can be finally acted on at the december meeting of the fac ulty if heads of departments will send in their proposed changes to me by october 30 i will see that they are placed in the hands of the course committee p m palmer chairman n admission will be charged for the performance which will te open to the public gian-carlo manotti's opera was first produced for broad way audiences at the ethel bar rymore theater may 1 1947 in addition to the opera the telephone with the broadway cast lehigh university will of fer to the public under the aus pices of the albert n cleaver memorial fund a varied pro gram of music derna de lys who will be heard as lucy in the tele continued on page 3 col 4 by robert swanson the issue of honoraria was once again brought up at ar cadia's third meeting of the fall semester wednesday night in drown hall the question of whether uni versity subsidized organizations could or could not declare an honoraria was settled last spring by the past year's arcadia af firmatively however due to the wide differences of opinion on the campus the question was again introduced the following is the settlement agreed upon if partially - subsidized or ganizations have a surplus they may declare an hon oraria in effect there shall be no cash stipend to the members but funds may be allocated to a group function or project that is of perma nent or beneficial nature to the organization and lehigh university this will be sub ject to the approval of ar cadia the cannon frequently used in the starved from the pic ture instead they become stunted these stunted fish in crease rapidly in number due to the absence of predators three species which show this stunting to a marked degree are the common sunfish the yellow perch and the catfish all three are common in most pocono lakes and ponds where many anglers go for their game fishing no noticeable decrease in the fish population accompanied the passing of large numbers of the report of the associate professor of biology indicates that the popular practice of killing fish predators hawks herons snakes snapping - tur tles and so forth may lead to nothing but harm of the sever est sort to state fishing during recent years according to trem bley the fisherman has con sidered any fish-predator his personal enemy to be given no quarter the number of fish predators accordingly has shrunk to a surprising and alarming degree . lehigh awarded research aid a two thousand dollar grad uate research fellowship has been awarded to lehigh univer sity by the socony - vacuum company dr harvey a neville director of the lehigh institute of research announced today the lehigh fellowship one of thirteen sponsored by this com pany is the only fellowship given for the support of re search in analytical chemistry the fellowship is assigned to the department of chemistry and chemical engineering the recipient for this award has not yet been selected constant appeasement of the soviet union can only result in war said professor auric n dunlap as he spoke on the berlin crisis at the first meet ing of the international rela tions club wednesday evening oct 20 in room 466 packard lab professor dunlap pointed out that berlin today is only a small symbol of the broad struggle between russia and the western cowers for world domination for he remarked if russia is forced to withdraw from ber lin she will try again at some other point where these two great powers clash russian imperialism has always operated under a policy of expansion by probing for weaknesses in its enemy's defenses this method was not conceived by stalin or by the communist party it has been the underlying character istic of all russian imperialism since the time of the czars when russia was defeated in her war with japan in 1905 she transferred her expansion to the balkans and her pressure there was greatly responsible for world war i perhaps even today russia is planning to withdraw from berlin for she is making great advances in the far east compromise is the graceful acceptance of the russian point of view a strong five-point program is professor dunlap's answer to the russian threat first aban don future negotiations with russia any further attempt at compromise only destroys our prestige second continue to press charges against russia in the security council of the united nations if russia walks out of the un to save face all the world will recognize her imper ialistic views the constant threat of veto will be removed and the avowed enemy of world federation will be separated from access to that federation to those who say that russia's withdrawal from the un will irrevocably divide the world in two professor dunlap's reply is that that division has already been made third in professor dunlap's program is full rearmament of the united states and its allies with a guarantee of protection for western europe fourth continue the airlift to berlin with fighter escort if none of these measures suc ceeds in discouraging the soviet union professor dunlap advo continued on page 3 col 3 professor dunlap explained some of the strategy behind the berlin blockade postponement of a final treaty made neces sary by the blockade enables russia to strip eastern germany under the right of the con queror and to consolidate its foothold in the german and polish governments when the time comes to make a final treaty russia will point out the foolishness of changing what she has already accomplished and all eastern europe lege jenkintown will present a concert at lehigh november 23 the club will be entertained by the lehigh glee club who will escort the girls to the car negie tech football game din ner and a dance all men who wish a blind date with any of the girls from beaver are advised to contact el clymer taylor d to make arrangements cost will be between three and five dollars for the entire evening a joint
