the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 33 tuesday march 3 1998 all the lehigh news first regurgitator spits out magic by douglas j hyrb news writer performer stevie starr also known as the regurgitator amazed more than 100 people with his act in the great room at ulrich student center saturday night stevie starr is the stage name for stephen wright wright's act involves swallowing various objects storing them in his esopha gus and returning them in any given order at any given time sponsored by university productions wright's monologue and various stunts pro vided those in attendance with an hour of nonstop excitement during the show wright swallowed and returned nine half-dollars two goldfish a billiard ball one-half can of butane gas a nail and nine rings given to him by members of the audience he also swallowed a sugar substitute and water returning them sepa rately into the hands of an audience member a highlight of the show was when wright swallowed a ring that belongs to david kapferer 00 he followed that by swallowing a locked padlock and key while kapferer was on stage with him wright returned the ring locked in the padlock fol lowed by the key the whole thing was mind-boggling kapferer said i don't understand how he can control his stomach like that it is 100 percent pure muscle control wright said i am actually swallowing the objects wright said he can store things separate ly in his body so that they don't get mixed together that is the only way to keep things like sugar dry during the performance he explained another precaution he takes is to keep the goldfish from mixing with the butane gas wright said that he has never lost a goldfish during a performance my stomach is like a supermarket he said wright picked up his ability to swallow and regurgitate objects naturally when he was 4 years old i lived in a children's home in scotland and i used to swallow my pocket money as a hiding place wright said as he got older he taught himself to ingest and spit out more objects i used to go to school and impress my teachers by swallowing chalk and bringing up the different colors for them he said wright has been performing on stage for 14 years he began his career on the tv show that's incredible in 1983 since then wright has toured the world with his b&w photo by lauren lustbader news writer adjunct professors of music debra field and christopher disanto displayed their tal ents in a faculty recital at zoellner arts center's baker hall saturday evening field a soprano and disanto a clar inetist performed individually and together both were accompanied by pianists eileen wescoe and michael sheadel the opening of the recital was performed by disanto he played fantasistucke op 43 an example of the short instrumental pieces typical of the romantic period field took the stage next she displayed her singing talents with six songs most of which had originated in foreign countries she performed music including se tu m'ami danza danza fanciulla and sebben crudele aaron oliver 00 said performances like this are often overlooked by many members of the university community it is too bad not too many people come to these recitals he said you get quality people performing things that most people would pay a lot of money to see elsewhere and here its free speech addresses world population growth by debbie ludvigson news writer executive director of the zero population growth organization peter kostmayer emphasized the need to regulate population growth in his speech entitled people and the environment striking a better balance thursday in neville before becoming the director of the zero population growth organization also known as zpg kostmayer served in the u.s house of representatives for 14 years kostmayer also has a repu tation for being a strong advocate of wilderness and national parks and from 1994-1995 served with the environmental protec tion agency kostmayer opened his speech by providing some basic popula tion statistics currently the world popula tion is 5.9 billion people and it is predicted to be 12 billion in another 50 years kostmayer said that is an increase of 168 people per minute to handle the population growth conflict kostmayer has developed some suggestions his first suggestion is to donate money worldwide in an effort to provide more access to family planning kostmayer also suggested age appropriate sex education in the schools a hotly debated issue his version of sex education is con fined to the teaching of abstinence schools should only teach abstinence as a form of safe sex kostmayer said our teenage pregnancy rate is very high we must teach abstinence in the schools to the children another issue kostmayer's speech addressed was the popu lation problem prevalent around the world this problem is espe cially pronounced in many third world countries he explained as countries such as china and africa begin to move toward industrialization they are going to want to have the same standard of living as we have in the united states kostmayer said and then the problem will be that each of these people in these countries will want cars we cannot look at this prob lem country specific we must look at it more globally he said kostmayer also mentioned other problems that congress was dealing with regarding the popula tion problem the first of these conflicts was the task of providing resources to the population as it continues to expand kostmayer mentioned that although this was a major conflict a few years ago the problem has slowly been solved due to the fact that the majority of the population growth has taken place in areas that are abundant in resources kostmayer also discussed the 1994 agreement that the united states made with several nations regarding family planning although the agreement had been signed and supposedly put into action several
