the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 31 tuesday february 24 1998 all the lehigh news first musical explores composers role by giselle gutierrez news writer a free live music performance for children and adults entitled what do composers do was held saturday at baker hall in the zoellner arts center the event featured perfor mances by composer and pianist paul salerni professor of music violinist paul chou assistant pro fessor of music and soprano singer debra field adjunct assis tant professor of music pieces composed by mozart handel the beatles and salerni were performed nearly 300 people were pre sent at the event which was spon sored by binney and smith inc and the crayola factory located in easton salerni began the event by explaining the purpose of the per formance to teach children about some of the essential parts of com posing and listening to music it is important to give children a flavor for music as well as inform them that music is a form of communiciation that is com posed of three types of people composers performers and listen ers salerni said the show's program also included special guest appear ances by domenic salerni age 10 inferno extinguished but questions sizzle by david butler editor in chief the call came into the bethlehem fire department at 5:35 p.m saturday what proved to be one of the most intense fires in the city's history was under way for over two hours flames and billow ing smoke poured out of a vacant ware house formerly used by sure fit products on the west end of sand island it was situ ated between the lehigh canal and lehigh river at 250 w river st according to a report in the morning call the warehouse was a brick building 100 feet tall and more than 100 yards long vehicles were rerouted off route 378 near the hill-to-hill bridge when smoke and debris made driving hazardous despite the hazards thousands of bethlehem resi dents and lehigh students turned out for a close look at the blaze most people seemed entertained they did not seem very concerned about the property damage and possible injuries said ik-joon choi 98 that's what i was thinking about ben zibrak 98 had mixed feelings about the fire it was cool to see a ftre that big and b&w photo by jimmy bromfield the former sure-fit products warehouse burned down saturday the cause of the fire is still under investigation by authorities student-run play entertains by chris litman news writer the play baby with the bathwater entertained and star tled a packed house over the week end at the black box theater in the zoellner arts center the play which was written by christopher durang was directed by ben wagman 98 it focused on the upbringing of a baby through the toddler years and into adulthood and the experience of child-rearing however the audience soon realized that the play was not just an ordinary story of a child grow ing up the baby's father john played by brad mampe 99 con soled his baby by calling it a baked potato the mother helen played by lisa regalia 98 decided not to find out the baby's sex because she wanted to be polite to it baby with the bathwater posed the question of whether a person can overcome their envi ronment and the unhealthy choices made by their parents to one day lead a normal life to explore the answer the play thrusts the audi ence into the lives of some extremely eccentric characters wagman said that while the co medic elements come through in the performances the play could be looked at as doing something more serious i think it can be played as straight drama he said in some ways it is a very abstract play and for that reason the performances could be taken more dramatically jennifer wescoe 98 and amy fechter 00 had the oppor tunities to play multiple charac ters each with their own distinct characteristics wescoe played a near-psychot ic nanny and a devil-worshiping school principal as well as a car ing mother fechter had the diffi cult task of playing four charac ters including a young girl whose baby gets eaten by a german shepard and the wife of john and helen's boy wescoe said that it was some times difficult to perform several different characters it was hard trying to come up with distinguishing characteris tics she said it got easier as we rehearsed though wescoe said the crowd reacted see blaze page alo see composers page a lo see bathwater page 10 ibfe ~~| men's basketball the flu has affected the population of the famcm oew m team beat cornell 500 students and world is growing at an red raiders 87-66 faculty members this alarming rate dueling is legal in k jm see page a24 year see page a4 see page 81 paraguay as long as both parties are l sports al4-a24 news al-alo science 81-b3 registered blood ummf ' w ath etic trainers a2o panhel a6 science briefs b3 donors i^u ft 1 swimming/diving a24 singing valentines a9 hnpy^^usse.com
