the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 30 friday february 13 1998 all the lehigh news first by chris litman news writer career services offers resources for success career services offers summer intern ships and employment opportunities for juniors and seniors but also helps find a career path for those who are confused located in rauch business center career services offers many programs and services to all students and on-campus inter views is just one of them along with career counseling mock interviews resume and cover letter cri tiques there is also an online web page that consists of job notice listings a database of alumni and the scheduling of interviews and workshops career counseling is a general resource available to all students by making an appointment students then talk to a coun selor about a wide range of career concerns a larger portion of what career services does is coordinate on-campus interviews for summer internships and jobs we work a lot with sophomores and juniors in helping them find internships related to their major lori kennedy associate director of career services and corporate relations said we will have between 300 and 400 employers that will come through here this year kennedy said the most requested skill of a student by employers is sophisticated interpersonal skills no matter what field the student is pursuing they want students who can deal with customers other employees and upper-man agement she said communication is such a broad skill but it is really about being able to adapt to different situations kennedy said programs targeted toward freshmen and sophomores focus more on awareness and exposure to career options if we are working with freshmen and sophomores normally we are focusing a lot on what they should major in kennedy said we do a lot of career counseling where we'll break it down into different assessment exercises interpret that and then focus on different skills to hopefully piece together a major for them another program offered by the depart ment is an annual mini-career development program called career explorer which was held last week the program consists of four workshops that cover everything from choosing a major to resume writing and networking frances leighton 99 an accounting major said the workshops were very informative the resume writing and job interview ing workshops were especially helpful leighton said the interview sessions gave me valuable advice on being prepared for the types of questions the employers might ask another resource sigi plus system of interactive guidance and information pronounced ziggy plus is a computer pro gram available in the career library that assists in planning and offers guidance in career decisions the process first involves a self-assess ment of skills interests and desires in the work setting it can lay out specific sugges tions for pursuing a career and provides information about one particular career such as how in demand the field will be in the future and average starting salaries students who are not sure of a career can use sigi as an assessment tool kennedy said the computer will prompt the student with questions about their skills interests and values and then take that information and list the best suited occupations it is a good example of a service that is offered to everybody she said for juniors and seniors many of the pro grams offered by career services are geared toward finding actual work experience the work becomes more intensive for the student kennedy said at that level we do many experiential types of pro grams one such experience is the externship pro gram offered during the winter semester and is available only to students in the college of arts and sciences the department pairs alumni and students listening with the heart brings comprehension by alison reemer news writer professor juan baughn lectur er of education and human ser vices in the college of education spoke about issues of tolerance and understanding wednesday in the university center baughn's speech entitled multiple perspectives on diversity and tolerance focused on expression and comprehension among conversing individuals it is not until we feel safe to ask questions and be sure we will be accepted before we can learn and express our feelings and views baughn said according to baughn some people listen to hear some listen to give an opinion and some listen to understand but most importantly those who listen to understand listen with their hearts he said not until you can take a per son out of the situation and paint a picture for them can someone truly place themselves in that position and only then can they truly understand baughn said baughn used the movie a time to kill to illustrate this point in one scene matthew mcconaughey's character asks the jury to close their eyes and visualize the violent rape of a young girl this method enables the jury to empathize with the girl's father and further understand his suffering ten percent of what people hear is words 30 percent is sounds and 60 percent is body language baughn said but it takes more than 100 percent to understand you need to listen to your heart in order to feel something and understand it baughn said another topic that he dis cussed was the variety of views people can have on the same issue or the same situation baughn made a diagram of a five-way intersection on each road he placed different travellers - a truck driver a taxi driver a middle school principal a mother b&w photo hy euzabeth hall professor juan baughn emphasizes different view points about listening and comprehension in his lec ture multiple perspectives on diversity and
