the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 29 tuesday february 10 1998 all the lehigh news first reception held to unveil class of 98 sign by natalie cantor news editor the senior class gift committee sponsored an unveiling of the class of 98 sign in front of the university center thursday each year the concrete in the sign is re-poured to reflect the cur rent graduating year the senior class gift committee decided to hold a ceremony and reception this year in order to involve the entire senior class the evening began in front of the uc approximately 40 people stood in the rain and watched as dolph habeck 98 public rela tions co-chairperson of the senior class gift committee and scot pasquale 98 removed a covering from the sign additional activities that were originally scheduled for outside continued in the asa packer dining room in the uc due to the inclement weather a series of speakers addressed over 100 peo ple who had gathered for the cock tail reception kristina theiss 98 president of the senior class was the first speaker she welcomed guests and wished seniors luck for the rest of the year theiss also praised the efforts of the senior class gift committee the senior class gift committee has been hard at work collecting money from us to give back to lehigh theiss said theiss also expressed her wish for the unveiling to become an annual event that seniors will look forward to each year we're hoping it will become a lehigh tradition theiss said it's something that the class of 98 can be proud of because it's starting with us it's a tradition that will hopefully carry on for a long time to come theiss introduced amy costello 91 assistant director of the alumni association who serves as advisor to the class of 98 costello's father had attended lehigh and she fondly recounted seeing the graduation year sign in front of the uc as a child and look ing forward to the day when she would be able to attend lehigh the next speaker was nelson markley provost and vice presi dent of academic affairs he dis cussed the need for students to stay connected and involved with lehigh after they have graduated b&w photo by martindale center for the study of private enterprise is in the process of selecting 10 to 12 new members to begin a research project that will entail trips to washington d.c and chile in the upcom ing months each year the martindale center selects a group of juniors to become martindale student associates these students carry out a research project that takes them to a different country each year in past years the students have traveled to germany france argentina mexico the czech republic and canada the end product of the program is a stu dent-published journal perspectives of business and economics consisting of one article written by each student according to j richard aronson fair child-martindale professor of economics and director of the martindale center the journal has a circulation of 1 500 and can be found in college and university libraries throughout the united states it is the nation's only under graduate journal of business and economics after the selection process has conclud ed the students decide on research topics and begin preparing for their upcoming trip this program is for students who want to work aronson said the martindale center was founded in 1980 with a gift from harry turner martindale 27 this endowment yields a regular income for the center the endowment gives the organization the independence to conduct research each year without worrying about funding for the following year since the center's activities are expensive money is also solicited from alumni outside the endowment the annual research trip is fully funded by the center aronson said that this is the main reason why they must limit the num ber of inducted members david bellows 98 was one of the stu dents who participated in the martindale center's trip to germany last year i think that the martindale center pro vides excellent opportunities that a person shouldn't let pass by bellows said the trip i took to germany was something that i'll always remember because it was such a unique experience this year 46 juniors from all three col leges applied to the center the selected applicants will be inducted on the evening of march 24 all student associates past and present will be invited to attend larry kantor a former faculty member will be giving a speech at the induction cer emony kantor is chief economist of normandy asset management inc in greenwich ct last year the induction speaker was marty baron an editor of the new york times immediately after students are accepted to the program they will begin meeting weekly to get an idea of what they want to research the meetings will consist of lec tures discussions films and other activities that will help prepare the students for their visit to chile during spring break the students will travel to washington d.c to meet with experts from the world bank the inter american development bank and the chilean embassy aronson said that this trip will be the launch pad for their research the bulk of the students research will be gathered during the one week excursion to chile in may accompanied by faculty staff and alumni they will participate in various see unveiling page 8 see
