the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 26 friday january 30 1998 all the lehigh news first hazing a greek tragedy pledges continue to experience harmful effects * some names have been changed to protect identities it was hell week and dave a brother in a campus fraternity and his pledge brothers were sitting in a dark room at the fraternity house as some pledges tried to sleep on couches and others sat around in chairs dave sat on the cold tile floor it was a cold night for late spring and dave wrapped his arms around his knees to keep warm even with the windows open and the cold air blowing in the room his hands were sweaty one by one pledges were called out of the room and taken away as time passed dave's hands became clam mier and his stomach was getting queasy dave was scared because he didn't know what would happen once he was chosen / know we are going to get paddled it hasn't happened yet and there is not much time left the room was silent and no one dared to speak the sound of breathing was all dave could hear as he closed his eyes trying not to think about what would happen to him once he was called as he tried to think about classes and economics homework he had to get done his mind kept wandering back to his poten tial fate once his name was called the door opened dave come in a brother commanded dave left his pledge brothers and was led into another room the brothers ordered dave to face the wall and put his hands up on it a brother came up behind him but dave thought the house was playing a joke on him now that dave is a brother in the frater nity he chooses which pledges to hit and says he doesn't hit very hard some guys are bitter from the year before and take the attitude if i went through this you're sure as hell going to go through it " he said * * * of the nation's 3 million male under graduates 400,000 belong to greek organi zations on lehigh's campus slightly over half of male undergraduates are members of a fraternity hazing activities still persist at lehigh and brothers from various fraternities anonymously said they have recently been involved in activities including kidnappings paddling forced consumption of alcohol sleep deprivation forced calisthenics and humiliation in recent years pledges around the country have died as a result of hazing related activity in 1994 michael davis died during a kappa alpha psi hazing incident at southeast missouri state university davis and other pledges were beaten and when davis tried to escape he was chased down tackled and kicked in the chest b&w photo by cor zacharius an exhibit of futuristic toys entitled googol u is currently being shown at the smart discovery center in south bethlehem the above is an example of a toy truck with a futuristic twist special feature story by lisa spitz contributing editor dave heard the swoosh of a paddle and felt it sting on his backside every brother in the house had the opportunity to paddle dave as he stood in the middle of a semi-cir cle with his hands pressed against the wall one by one the brothers took turns hitting dave as hard as they chose to every other guy in the house has put up with this i can suck it up for 15 minutes as sweat began dripping off his face dave closed his eyes and pressed his hands firmly against the wall when the brothers finished paddling dave his rear end was sore and red he had trouble walking the next day and the pain lasted a few days zoellner falls short of perfect by billy stonberg assistant news editor zoellner arts center is running out of room trying to maintain a feasible budget during construction planners cut practice rooms from the original blueprints since its opening a year ago zoellner has been unable to support the number of stu dents taking private music lessons according to nadine sine music depart ment chairperson the root of this shortage is an influx of students taking private lessons the number now stands at 300 a 66 percent increase from last year last semester we were using every conceivable space to accommodate stu dents sine said we're totally out of space we had to turn back people wanting to take lessons sine admitted that leaving out some of the practice rooms that were in the original plan was not the most prudent of decisions they didn't build as many practice rooms as they should have due to expenses sine said ten practice rooms were cut to save money the current problem plaguing zoellner was not unforseeable according to sine the music department knew the building would barely accomodate the needs of faculty and students at the time it was being built going in we knew it was going to be a tight fit she said lamberton hall which will eventually be made into a campus pub will hold many of the private lessons formerly held in zoellner sine said since the pub is at least a year away from being started temporary facilities for the music department are being offered zoellner is not only suffering from a shortage of space besides not building enough practice rooms the rooms that were built are not soundproofed a feature impor tant for practicing musicians according to sine soundproofing is a very difficult thing she said even the most expensive sound-proof rooms let in extrane ous noise when asked if the rooms will be made more airtight sine said it
