the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 23 friday december 5 1997 all the lehigh news first construction under way for residence hall by elizabeth hazard news writer the new residence halls well under construction are scheduled to be complet ed by next august and will be the first non-greek housing on the hill the site for the housing has been cleared and graded and all foundations and floors have been made the brick bases are also completed and up and the roofs will be put in within a couple of weeks within a month most of the exterior work is expected to be completed because of the cold weather approaching the construction plans for this month include completion of all the exterior work and the interior work will begin immediately afterward most construction should be complet ed in the last part of next semester they might be opened for viewing at this time said tony corallo assistant vice presi dent of facilities planning and renovations the residence halls will be located off of upper sayre park road west of sigma b w photo hy andy braham the new residence halls will be the first non-greek housing on the hill faculty debate over sexual harassment by chris litman news writer members of the faculty debated issues regarding a revised policy on sexual harass ment at a faculty meeting monday in sinclair auditorium colleen callahan associate professor of economics is chair of the personnel com mittee responsible for drafting a proposal for a policy on sexual harassment for the university callahan presented a revised document to the faculty attendants and addressed the need for a definitive policy on sexual harassment as well as a vote on the revisions made to the previous proposal we as a university community are committed to an educational environment that is free from sexual harassment callahan said currently only students staff and administration have definitive guidelines and procedures if sexual harassment charges are claimed callahan said the purpose of a written policy is to explicitly outline the proce dures in the event that charges are made against a faculty member and that they are also more in accordance with federal laws callahan discussed several revisions to the policy suggested by the faculty in a meet ing last spring however the revised policy was criti cized for numerous shortcomings certain revisions were met with resistance by the faculty terry delph professor of mechanical engineering and mechanics proposed sev eral amendments to the policy the amendments addressed issues pertaining to due-process rights of the accused and the accuser the amendments also clari fied statements so the wording mimics those guidelines set forth by the u.s equal employment opportunity commission eeoc delph emphasized the strengthening of the rights of the both complainant and the accused in the event of formal hearings of a sexual harassment case the proposed amendments to the policy would ensure that both parties have available evidence per taining to the case i don't see how we could ever have a fair process if testimony is carried out secretly and neither party has any knowl edge of what is said about the other delph said this could lead to the worst sort of slander without opportunity of rebuttal by either party the proposed university-wide policy on sexual harassment describes procedures for faculty staff and student complaints it defines two forms of sexual harassment quid pro quo and sexually hostile work learning social or living environment quid pro quo occurs when a supervisor or faculty member explicitly or implicitly promises or withholds job-related or educa zetes raises 40,000 for cancer by lisa spitz associate editor the zeta psi fraternity will give the american cancer society a check this week for over 40,000 an amount which exceeds last year's donation by 19,000 the money was raised this semester as part of zeta psi's eight annual good scholar election which benefits cancer research steven patriarca 98 public relations chairman for zeta psi said he set a goal in march to raise 25,000 this year we tried to increase participation this year by encouraging participants to make more of a conscientious effort to raise money he said campus organizations which sponsored 67 candidates were honored nov 24 for their participation jaime birnbaum 00 represented alpha chi omega sorority which raised over 7,000 in the election the largest amount raised by any organization birnbaum was elected as the zeta psi good scholar she received an airline ticket for anywhere in the united states and alpha chi omega received 1,000 patriarca gave a special thanks to alvin cohen professor of economics who has been the faculty advisor and treasurer for the fundraiser cohen is retiring this year cohen said the most important lesson he learned from the election was the way stu dents responded to a challenge young adults can in fact assume respon sibility above and beyond what they ever dreamed they were capable of cohen said this year's good scholar election was in memory of warren w burnard 111 94 who lost his battle to a rare form of cancer on good friday earlier this year warren's brother edwin burnard 96 thanked the lehigh community for helping to save others from succumbing to cancer patriarca said he is proud to give back to the
