the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 19 friday november 1 4 1 997 all the lehigh news first faculty trio gives debut performance at zac by brad cawn news writer a multicultural crowd witnessed the zoellner arts center debut of the faculty trio last weekend the trio comprised of music department instructors paul chou nancy bidlack and hee-youn kim performed three classical masterpieces spanning 200 years of music history selections ranged from fritz kreisler to franz haydn to ludwig van beethoven violinist chou violin-cellist bidlack and pianist kim introduced a wide variety of classical styles to the diverse audience this concert and the many cultural events at zoellner provide a place where students have the unique chance to get involved with the arts and can get a taste with what good music is about chou assistant professor of music said the group's third performance and their first at the new performing arts center showcased the artists distinctive instrumen tal interplay the performance opened with kreisler's tambourine chinois with just violinist chou and pianist kim playing the piece along with two other kreisler segments replaced the original opening composition igor stravinsky's suite italienne " suite italienne didn't quite fit into the program chou said so the kreisler was a nice light piece that was better suited for the opening of the performance bidlack then joined the others for haydn's trio in g major and beethoven's archduke all three selections especially the beethoven piece proved to be quite compli cated chou said this was music that demands a lot of skill to play and listen to but i think we were quite successful he said despite the misconceptions that classical music is too sophisticated and boring for the masses chou believes that the performance accomplished a great deal in expanding the knowledge of music in the community there's a nice intellectual excitement about the compositions and i think the audi ence understood it chou said even with their busy schedules the three musicians jumped at the chance to collabo rate again we all love to play chou said in a university setting professors of music often don't have the time to perform but to us it is music and taoism mix by kelly height news writer steven nachmanovitch violinist com poser and author provided a free public lec ture on tao music and creativity at maginnes hall wednesday nachmanovitch began his speech by say ing let's take one minute of silence and sit and get comfortable in our seats and breath in air and then let it all leak out of us after the audience sat quietly for a minute nachmanovitch went on since i am a musician i noticed while we were sit ting here somebody coughed and many of you may have noticed how beautiful and resonant that cough sounded when we're just going about our business or having a class or whatever it is and somebody coughs it's just a noise but against the background of the minute of silence that cough is just a marvelous sound that went out into the universe nachmanovitch went on to quote the third patriarch of china sing sun who claimed the essence of taoism is the absence of preference nachmanovitch added his own view b&w photo by cori zacharius muslim leader faisal samud explains the history and practice of islam as part of lehigh's celebration of islam awareness week hall damages decrease residential life reports by alison meltzer news writer the damage done to freshman residence halls this semester has seen a substantial reduction in comparison to previous years although this type of inconvenience has diminished it has not disappeared the residence quarters for freshmen include taylor residential college lower centennials mcclintic-marshall dravo drinker and richards houses each semester an overall report stating the specific damage for each dormitory is evaluated by residential services and ozzie breiner associate director of residence halls our first report overall is less than what we usually get breiner said we can always expect a lot of typical things such as broken fire bubbles rampaged signs missing panic board devices tam pered with etc nothing serious has been reported so far this semester according to residential services fresh man halls have maintained an acceptable amount of control for the fall semester two reports concerning the status of each build ing are released each year many gryphons for freshman halls also agree that the damage done to their halls has been minimal terry su 00 a gryphon in m&m agrees our goal going into this year has been to decrease the amount of damage in the halls we have programs with our residents stress ing the importance of respecting the build ing su said our residents can always expect comments about this topic at every meeting we've done a pretty good job so far and we hope that everyone will continue to respect and take care of our building doug taylor 00 also a gryphon for m&m said there a noticeable decrease in damage is noticeable the damage is definitely more in con trol than last year taylor said thinking back to my freshman year there was a lot more destruction in the halls there was constant breakage of fire bubbles cracked mirrors and busted doors wreckage has decreased immensely mike burton residential life coordinator for m&m is pleased with the drastic reduction from my perspective the damage of this building has been reduced dramatical ly burton said ninety-eight percent of the students really take care of the environ ment in which they live i feel that the stu dents have been very respectful of their liv ing environment this year when there is destruction in certain areas of freshman halls it is a serious matter depending on the location of the problem residents are billed accordingly the majority of damage in freshman res idence halls is usually caused by guests of residents or residents of other living envi ronments this is due to their lack of respect and disconnection with the building when damage is first discovered the res idential life coordinator is
