the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 18 tuesday november 11 1997 all the lehigh news first fiji senior takes own life by t.j furman editor in chief tyler morris 98 found dead friday morning at house edward tyler morris 98 was found dead outside of the phi gamma delta fraternity house around 4:15 a.m friday by garbage collectors after hanging himself earlier in the morning from a fire escape northampton county coroner zachary lysek has ruled morris death a suicide the news was announced to the lehigh campus community via a system-wide computer network bulletin around 11:30 friday morning from vice provost of student affairs john smeaton the death of a student is always a tragedy but circum stances such as these add ques tions of confusion to our grief the bulletin read morris known to his friends as tyler was a pittsburgh native and member of fiji he is survived by his two brothers zachary 95 and hunter 01 and his parents edward and bonnie according to two friends morris 21 was at a bar on the northside earlier in the night before going to the tally ho around 1 a.m he returned to the fiji house near 2:30 a.m i wouldn't have guessed this would have happened in a million years said one of the friends who spoke extensively with morris before he went to the ho that evening the two friends said morris did not appear distressed or to be in a state of depression at the ho according to smeaton the lehigh police were called shortly after 4:30 a.m and a rescue squad arrived at fiji to attempt to resus citate morris fijj brothers were woken around 5:30 a.m and asked to remain in the house until they could be informed of morris death the brothers knew some one had died but were not informed of the details until 8 a.m when morris family had been told smeaton greek affairs coordinator jolly janson university chaplain lloyd steffen dean of student life scott walter and counseling services director lan birky were at fiji friday morning to provide support and information they were absolutely morris remembered as friendly by lisa a jones news editor and natalie cantor assistant news editor the sudden death of tyler morris 98 friday morn ing shocked students and faculty who remember the phi gamma delta fraternity member and accounting major as friendly and popular morris 21 was from pittsburgh he is survived by his parents edward and bonnie morris a younger brother hunter 01 and an older brother zachary 95 andy braham 98 president of fiji was a close friend to morris tyler always thought of others before himself braham said he was a great friend morris was a former treasurer for his fraternity and a rush adviser tyler was a devoted brother who always put the house first braham said hoists the stanley cup freshman parents weekend provides fun food game by patrick doherty senior news editor parents braved poor weather to visit lehigh during freshman parents weekend the weekend included discus sions and open houses as well as events such as jazzfest and a tail gate luncheon most importantly however it was an opportunity for parents to see lehigh up close i gave my parents a walking tour of campus and they were really winded christy anderson 01 said the weekend also gave par ents an opportunity to get a clos er look at the kind of school work their kids are doing samir patel 01 who has not declared his major but will proba bly enter the pre-med program said his parents were impressed with the curriculum after having a chance to talk to his professors my parents like to hear about the academic stuff patel said they know this is a good acade mic school and they know i'm get ting a good education the centerpiece of the week end was tailgates fraternities set up their own tailgating sec tions and upperelassmen parents and freshmen attended included with the tailgates was also a buf fet luncheon on the rauch field house lawn veronica mcdcvitt 01 who attended tailgates with her par ents said the event suffered from a low turnout i saw almost no freshmen that i knew except for about five peo ple mcdevitt said mcdcvitt attributed the low turnout both to the poor weather and to a reluctance on the part of some students to bring their par ents to tailgates i think it was because of the weather and the fact that they didn't want their parents to know about tailgates and the drinking that goes on she said other students agreed that the weather put a slight damper on the weekend patel's parents had planned to go to the football game against holy cross college but cancelled we were going to go to the game but the weather was kind of crappy patel said students also said freshman b&w photo by vicki steel freshman students and their parents eat at the
