the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 15 friday october 31 1997 all the lehigh news first awareness increased about sexual assault by emi takeshita news writer students raised awareness on campus of sexual assault though the clothesline project by hanging t-shirts speaking out against violence during the week of oct 27-31 tori bronaugh a counselor in johnson hall said this was the fifth year the universi ty has held an awareness week as a reminder that violence against women exists the program urged students to create t shirts in honor of a victim of sexual assault these t-shirts have been collected dur ing the past five years and were hung this year in the university center's grace lounge they will be taken down today every year more and more t-shirts are created to give students a chance to express their opinions on date rape and sexual violence tirzah brown 99 said the shirts are an important part of the week every year we hang t-shirts and it makes us realize that this is something that can't be ignored brown said in addition to the t-shirts other activities were held to discuss sexual assault on monday night a play presented by speaker deborah snyder german discussed female sexual functioning a candlelight vigil called take back the night march was held on thursday night the walk was led by rev lloyd steffen university chaplain beginning at lookout point and traveling down to packer chapel the candlelight vigil will draw attention b&w photo by michelle heyse t-shirts hang in grace hall to remember women affected by violence flu vaccine offered to keep campus healthy by heather ignall news writer the health center is offering students its annual flu vaccine through the bethlehem health bureau for the upcoming flu season the shots will be available from 11:30 a.m to 3:30 p.m on both thursday nov 6 in the wellness center in the university center and tuesday nov 18 in the kenner theatre in the ulrich student center the health center recommends flu shots for healthy people over 65 and for anyone with heart or lung disease asthma diabetes any immune system impairing disease severe anemia or kidney disease the vaccine is also recommended for people who live or work with children or volunteer in hospitals and nursing homes since they may be around people who can spread or catch the flu easily anyone who does not fall into any of these categories can get the flu vaccine as well i probably will get one to stay away from all the sicknesses on campus robin pomerantz 99 said fearing to be ill while away from home the vaccine is made from an inactivat ed virus grown in eggs so people who are allergic to eggs are not advised to get the shot many students feel that offering flu shots will ease them through a difficult time of the year i think offering the flu shot to students is a great idea since the flu season is always the same time as finals and that can cause big problems sue hunton 00 said the vaccine is given early in the year because it takes between one and two weeks to become effective the shot then lasts for the next six months or longer students who suffered from the flu shot last year should not assume that they won't need another one they should get it again because there is a new vaccine created every year depending on what strains of the disease doctors determine to be prevalent for that particular season doctors overseas are working on a nasal judging pumpkins by brad cawn news writer halloween festivities were off to an early start this week with the university's first pumpkin-carving contest the dining services staff and dining committee members developed the carv ing contest to provide students the chance to show off their pumpkin-carving prowess and win prizes in the process the contest was started to promote halloween and festive activities like it as well as to increase student interaction david joseph director of residential ser vices said when pumpkins were handed out last week students were encouraged to be creative students had complete freedom to paint design or carve their work of art b&w photo hy kim carville these pumpkins displayed in the ulrich student center were voted on by students see violence page 5 see flu page 5 see pumpkin page 5 h volleyball team loses student chosen as a miniversity offers to st peter's finalist in miss new unique classes and university 3-1 . jersey pageant opportunities writer ed 9 ar al,an poe see page 20 see page 4 see page 7 and lsd advocate timothy leary were sports 18-20 news 1-5 lifestyle 7-14 both kicked out of the football preview 18 world news briefs 2 culture corner 8 u.s military academy philauerbach 19 police reports 3 horoscopes 9 r . . _ _ a j -. i i •• . source deb and jen's land o swimming 20 andersen 3 look who s talking 11 useless facts webpage
