the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 7 friday september 26 1997 all the lehigh news first faculty students say farewell to likins by patrick doherty senior news editor representatives of the lehigh communi ty turned out monday with gifts and anec dotes to wish farewell to outgoing president peter likins the event began with a parade from ulrich student center to the university center the send-off was then held on the uc lawn with students faculty and admin istrators expressing their appreciation for likins among those formally recognizing likins for his years of service to lehigh was ronnie brandes 98 student senate presi dent brandes along with a delegation of student senators presented him with a gavel mounted on a plaque likins was also made an honorary presi dent of the senate brandes said likins sup port had been essential to the founding and early success of the senate the only president student senate has b w photo by scott reynolds president peter likins lifts his cowboy hat to the university the hat was a farewell present for his move to the university of arizona committee chosen for presidential search by chris litman news writer members of the campus search commit tee have been chosen and have begun the process of selecting candidates for a new president the committee consisting of faculty administrators and students will receive nominations for candidates in the coming months the committee's goal is to select a president by next spring dave williams chairman of the depart ment of materials science and engineering and co-chair of the committee said that the search process is a long and difficult one this decision affects lehigh's future and members of the committee will work closely together to ensure that the right can didate is chosen williams said two organizational meetings have already been conducted by the committee to discuss qualifications for candidates a president must have a high quality of academic leadership said williams we are looking for a person who can interact with all levels of the school administration the alumni the federal government corpo rations and foundations and most impor tantly the students the committee is co-chaired by raymond bell chair of the department of education and human services other members include mark bickhard professor of cognitive sciences bobb carson dean of college of arts and sciences ellen cogswell 99 tony corallo assistant vice president of facili ties and campus planning mohamad el aasser an lacocca professor and chair of the chemical engineering department ryan faulkingham 99 and lorna hunter dean of admissions and financial aid also on the committee are diane hyland chair of the psychology department george krallis doctoral student in civil and environ mental engineering and matthew melone assistant professor of law in the department of business and economics barbara traister english department chairperson and a member of the search committee that selected president likins in 1983 said the committee members will learn from each other this committee is composed of a good mix of people from many different areas of the university traister said an executive committee of trustees con sisting of members from several large cor porations will be in close communication with the campus committee and make the final decision by next summer assisting both committees will be exec utive search firm heidrick & struggles job fair offers access to future employers by kevin schregel and tracy suro news writers students interested in internships and job opportunities packed lacocca hall on tuesday night to talk with the 1 20 corpora tions which attended the 1 997 career fair the event which was coordinated by career services was designed to allow stu dents interested in working in a corporate setting the opportunity to learn more about potential employers and to establish employment contacts that would be benefi cial to students beginning their careers donna goldfeder director of career services was one of the coordinators of the event typically in the past we have had 60 to 75 organizations attend so i think
