the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 4 tuesday september 16 1997 all the lehigh news first campus pub on way by jordan hyatt news writer students ' ideas used in plans for the project planning for the campus pub to be built in lamberton hall is well under way after two years of informal and formal discus sions about the project the residential environment report said two years ago that a pub would aim to expand the range of socially acceptable options on-campus and to encourage an increased non-greek setting students also voiced their opinions about an alternative social hangout in a survey last year jenny volchko associate dean of student life explained the purpose of the pub this will be a place where alcohol is served but is not the focus volchko said students who are not of age can socialize with other students and faculty student senate formed an informal com mittee two years ago to discuss ideas for an alternative social place on campus last year a more serious committee was formed daniel ia avolese 98 emily wurgaft 99 and tim shotmeyer 00 were chairper sons of that committee which met with volchko to discuss getting student input for the project they decided to formulate a campus wide survey the response was tremendous said ronnie brandes 98 senate president volchko agreed i have never seen a response to a sur vey like this she said more than 1,000 students responded which is a quarter of the population here respondants said they wanted a place to relax and socialize with other students and professors some said they would like to have pool tables and darts in the pub while others wanted to be able to eat and watch television there the pub committee tallied the results and presented the information to volchko volchko then took the results to the architects and the planning committee which consists of both students and faculty a program committee for the campus social space was also formed anthony corallo assistant vice president for facilities planning and renovation five undergraduates and one graduate student met with dining services to decide how they wanted the space to function and what they want to happen there dining services said they would like to hire as many students as possible to work at the pub security and bartending positions will be filled in conjunction with state laws to keep the project moving we have to secure a liquor license volchko said barry gaal assistant vice president of business services applied for the license in july if it is granted before the lamberton construction is completed it will be used at the stage door it would later be transferred the committees will reconvene this semes ter to finalize architectural plans and discuss the resources needed to complete the project b&w photo hy kimberly quinn lamberton hall will be the site of the campus pub architects do not plan to alter the exterior of the building plans for the inside are well under way comedy show brings large crowd to ulrich by kevin shregel news writer nearly 200 people crowded between subversions and the game room in the ulrich student center to see comedian gregory carey perform friday night carey has appeared on stand up stand up on comedy central and uptown comedy club on fox i'm not a morning person carey joked in the army they say they do more before 9 a.m than most people do all day to me that's not a good thing it's just bad scheduling dave kapferer 00 special events chairman of university productions was pleased with the turnout for the show when he was here last year he was really good kapferer said he killed so a lot of b w photo hy jimmy brom field a moving van was parked by the president's house on friday to pack up president likins belongings for his move to arizona rha says aloha ' 01 by jordan hyatt news writer the lower centennials inaugural luau took place in the dormitories quad on saturday evening residents of lower cents played games and voted in the residence hall association elections joe rummel 01 participated in a lip synching event it was an interesting idea rummel said it's fun to get stupid and make peo ple laugh once in a while the luau was a good opportunity to meet the people who live in the other build ings he said what would you do for a klondike bar was the next activity of the evening students got up in front of the crowd and did something interesting or different to receive an ice cream bar residents played volleyball on the sand court and a barbecue was held for dinner the rha elections followed the elections were a major point used see pub page 5 see comedian page 5 see luau page 5 bmbmmj lh 1 mlllhllilltaßi mflfflw ■£____________■quick hfs h=rs football team loses to miniversity courses some weight-loss f/\ci gl|p fordham in overtime offer students and medications may not wm wt^i w**t 42 " 35 -
