plans for junior week show excellent program two run lead in first inning proves to be too much for lehigh nine lehigh passes up first match beck and church play well score 4 - 2 the elizabethan englishman subject of an excellent edu cational address extensive arrangements made to afford un usual entertainment to large number of guests from all over the country few hits registered lee pitches excellent ball in first try yap and norkiewicz play well in the field special music to feature joseph c smith sherbo and versatile sextette to compete for honors as musicians drown hall to be decorated in novel fashion the arts and science club held one of the most successful meetings in its history wednesday evening in drown hall a large group of stu dents faculty and town visitors made up the audience and all en joyed a very instructive and enter taining evening mr harry osborne taylor was the principal speaker of the evening and gave a talk which was enjoyed beyond question by all those who attended mr taylor took as his topic the elizabethan english man and treated it in a superb manner by means of several ex quisite character sketches mr taylor has spent a large part of his life in studying this period of england's history and is perhaps the best authority in this country on the subject in the past five years there have been published several of his books which are the result of hard research study these books have met with much favor and the critics have given them a royal reception it was a great pri vilege and honor to have such a man as the the guest of a lehigh society the meeting was presided over by c p gooding 22 who in the absence of the president and vice president took the chair prof hughes was asked to introduce mr taylor for it was due to his efforts that the club was afforded the op portunity of hearing such a man prof hughes made a few prelim inary remarks and then introduced mr taylor in a very delightful way tt would be impossible to record continued on page three dr emery speaks to the st paul's society the lehigh baseball team fell for the second time this season when it was conquered by the lowly ursinus nine by a 3-1 score it is the first defeat that the brown and white combination has suffered since the loss of the opening game of the season to vermont and the set-back came as a big surprise to a large number of lehigh backers there seemed to be no apparent rea son for the defeat except that shel lenberger the lanky ursinus twider completely silenced the lehigh bats five was the complete number of safe bingles v that the brown and white men garnered off his deliv ery and except in the sixth he kept them singled out to one inning donovan led the lehigh attack with two safeties while rote savaria and yap shared the other three dave pfeiffer was tom keady s selection to mount the hillock at the start of the game and the attack launched against him by the col legeville aggregation was somewhat unexpected dave retired the first man easily on a grounder but rote's miscue on moser's roller gave the enemy an opening kengle the next man up and the one who was the principal cause in lehigh's down fall caught one of pfeiffer's shoots on the nose and lifted it gently over the right field wall driving moser over the plate and giving ursinus a lead of two runs canan then poled another safety to right but a double killing donovan to rote to yap ended the opening proceed ings donovan made an auspicious start when he singled safely to right with one gone but he was immediately forced at second by savaria who was later cut down trying to pilfer continued on page six lehigh bowed to defeat at the hands of rutgers in the first tennis match of the season on wednesday afternoon by a score of 4-2 al though defeated lehigh put up a very good game and showed that there is material for a very team which once developed and rounded into shape should prove formidable to the best opponents the best work for the visitors was done by acting captain jones who paired off with acting captain beck and the sets between these two men were always nip and tuck with beck hav ing a slight edge on jones how ever beck was not up to his usual form and seemed to be a little off color at the start but gradually limbered up as the games pro gressed he was the only one to win in the singles defeating jones after a hard tussle 3-6 9-7 ;* 5-7 beale lehigh and dixon rut gers played a quite evenly matched game the latter coming out on top in the singles between keeler of rutgers and laughton of lehigh the rutgers man finally emerged the v.ctor 6-3 6-4 tn the match between church of lehigh and potter of rutgers church started off with a dash tak ing the first set 6-4 displaying won derful form and showing possibili ties of developing into an excellent player he displayed a pretty for ward 1 drive and although a trifle wild at times should prove very effective when once properly con trolled although he did better work than potter he lost the next two sets to him 6-4 and 6-2 by reason of his inability to control properly this lightning like drive with a little more practice and con trol he promises to develop into one of lehigh's best defenders the doubles were very interest ing especially that between jones and dixon of rutgers and beck and church of lehigh both sides displayed some very clever work but endurance and tenacity finally showed lehigh superior to their op continued on page three electricals hear two speakers at their meet lehigh's annual northern baseball invasion will start next saturday when the brown and white meets west point on the latter's home grounds this trip is an annual feature of the lehigh baseball sche dule and it usually takes place dur ing junior week this year four games will be played on the trip and they all prom ise to be hard fought contests army vermont boston college and hjoly cross on successive play ing days represents a hard sche dule for a college team and par ticularly as the first three have strong teams this year with a rather weak pitching staff coach keady will be hard pressed for moundsmen lees will bear the brunt of the work ; he will pitch at least two of the games charles lee and conroy will prob ably divide the remaining games the line-up for the rest of the team is somewhat in doubt yap will probably occupy first base sa varia rote and donovan will make the trip as innelders and the out fielders will probably be norkic wicz larkim and thompson seh ring will do the receiving if the lehigh infield improves its work of the last few games the prospects for bringing back sev eral victories is good the team has some good hitters and lees has been pitching good ball this year lee also made a favorable impres sion by his will be fur nished by the versatile sextette from philadelphia pa this is the first appearnce of the versatile sex tette in bethlehem and they are ex following the sophomore cotillion dance the delta tau deltas will give their annual breakfast dance mv for their excellent dance music they have also been engaged to play for the sophomore cotillion dance on tuesday evening immediately chestra from interfratern ity dance in drown hall monday april 25 : guests ar rive the program for the week is as follows : monday morning never before have such elaborate plans been made and everything points to the best and most successful junior week ever attempted at lehigh some of the house-party guests are expected to arrive on sunday afternoon but the majority will arrive sometime on monday from that time un til friday following things will be on in full sway the various com mittees in charge of the dances and entertainment have succeeded in all their plans for the big occasion an unusually large attendance from the freshman sophomore junior and senior classes will greatly aid in making this junior week a big suc cess never before have as many men signified their intention of participating in the celebrations final plans have been completed for the junior week festivities which will begin the first thing on will consist of eight pieces this year the mustard and cheese club will not give their annual spring show during junior week as has been the case in the past years dances have been substitut ed in the place of the show and the program of the week remains very well balanced a big surprise for the guests of junior week will be in the drown hall decorations these are to be made by custer and co of new york city who recently decorated for the princeton prom and many new and ingenious ideas are to be worked out the decorations will be of an entirely different nature than in past years and should be a complete surprise this junior week there is to be a single program for all three of the big dances and will be in the form of a very unique souvenir this idea has been adopted by a special program committee consisting of re presentatives from the three dance committees he illustrated mr dcturk's talk was given fro'.n a personal experience w'th and work on the electric furnace which made his talk the more interesting he dealt with the heroult arc fur nace and covered all phases as in stallation control performance etc the heroult arc furnaces are made in various sizes ranging from 100 pound capacity to 30 tores capacity it is essentially a refining furnace as contrast with a pure smelting furnace a six ton furnace in melting down draws a load of about 1300 to 1500 k w the temper ature of these furnaces is controlled automatically and the general elec tric controlling apparatus is general ly used an average of 825 k w hours per net ton of steel is used these furnaces have a big advan tage in that they have a varying cycle of operation and they may be seniors notice sword and crescent held a meet ing at the delta tau delta house last wednesday evening almost the entire club was present a discussion was held 1 on the question of hazing prompted by the class fight of last week as a result of the discussion sword and crescent went on record as being in favor of re-establishing organized hazing in the future the next meeting will probably be held on the wednesday or thursday following junior lehigh's freshman base ball team found an easy prey in beth lehem high school's team on wednesday afternoon winning from them by a score of 19-3 the features of the game were the pitching of both tuggey and john son who pitched almost air-tight ball and also the base-running of the yearlings who pilfered many bases manager harper is well satisfied with his team and says that at last ! the boys have found their stride i and should certainly kick up a lot ! of dust from now on commencing tomorrow afternoon on taylor field the frosh will start on a very strenuous schedule mo ravian prep will the first attrac tion and the game will start at 3.30 o'clock on tuesday april 26 the team goes to reading and will cross bats with the reading high j school team which is said to be i a very fast team this year then ! on wednesday april 27 the frosh will olav perm frosh on franklin all dues of the senior class should be paid to the members of the committee on or before satur day april 23rd this is quite necessary in order that the senior class plaque may be prepared be fore the class of 21 graduates continued on page four the regular meeting of the st paul's society was held last friday evening in the parish house of the church of the nativity plans for the ensuing year were discussed and several changes in the meetings will probably be made among these the holding of the freshman recep tion in the form of a dinner in which the freshmen can become bet ter acquainted with the objects of the society dr emery the oldest member of the society and one who has at tended more meetings than any oth er person gave a very interesting talk bringing out the need of reli gion in colleges and college life he said in part : in the activities of college life it is a fine thing for a group of students to organize into a society that has as its central idea not ath letics or studies or pleasures but a closer connection with the church and a growth of spiritual life a very significant point brought out mi dr emery's talk was the similarity of view in am article by e s martin in the current issue of harper's magazine entitled the unrest in the colleges and an ar ticle by h g wells in the satur day evening post on education dr emery urged everyone to read e s martinis article especially the last meeting of the year will be held during of the st paul's society was held last friday evening in the parish house of the church of the nativity plans for the ensuing year were discussed and several changes in the meetings will probably be made among these the holding of the freshman recep tion in the form of a dinner in which the freshmen can become bet ter acquainted with the objects of the society dr emery the oldest member of the
