the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 all the lehigh news first vol 104 no 44 tuesday april 29 1997 zac releases the spirit of art by jennifer o'brien news writer the spirit of art from within the zoellner arts center was unleashed into the lehigh community dur ing zacday on thursday the events of zacday advertised as the offieial unoffieial-celebration-actualization of the zoellner arts center were led by the religion studies departments deep play class under the direction of norman girardot professor of religion studies those attending the event were encouraged to get into the spirit of the day and follow the deep play stu dents by putting together costumes and masks to wear during the events avery oldt 97 creative director for deep play and zacday felt the events of the day were a good way to let the community know art is an important part of the lehigh campus art is alive and well at lehigh oldt said it now needs to be seen and to be heard loudly thc opening inspirational sermon by world renowned folk artist howard fins ter was moved into maginnes hall due lo inclement weather bu it seemed nothing could put a damper on the enthusiasm dis played by those involved students wearing costumes that ranged from sunflow ers to cows to devils entertained and provided beads incense and bread to the audience until the ritual ringmaster and mistress of mystery welcomed the audi ence and encouraged them to begin unleashing the spirit finster began his sermon titled the spirit of art at the end of the millennium to an enthusiastic applause the audience had to imagine the pyrotechnic flashes which had to be cut out of the program due to the constraints of having the event indoors i like to see you all having fun finster said while welcoming the audience i'd much rather see you b w photo by shane marquess zacday procession started festivities with a blast participants began their walk to the zoellner arts center for the spirit of art unleashing studying abroad poses difficulties she stood at the end of the long line or queue as she had heard the other students say and impatiently shifted her weight from one leg to the other every few minutes it was nearing 5 p.m in the dully lit and stuffy international office at university college london late last january when lisa netcher 97 really began to fear that she wouldn't have anywhere to sleep for the next five months netcher had arrived in london the day before to spend the second semester of her junior year abroad an opportunity not to be missed she recalled hear ing friends who had already gone overseas say right now the only thing she missed was her nice warm bed at lehigh netcher and two of the other lehigh students studying at ucl had been put up in a hall the pre vious night but that morning they had been told they had to find alternate housing because classes were starting the next day now she stood in a line waiting to see if the university could find any thing for her netcher may have been dis mayed at this point hut she was not surprised her trip to london had heen plagued with problems even before she left this was just the latest problem at hand it was like we were just thrown into england nelcher said between 60 and 80 students go abroad every spring semester and between 20 and 30 go abroad in the fall semester this year lehigh is offering more than 40 approved semester programs in more than 20 countries although more and more students go abroad each year not every expe rience is a smooth one the most common problems are housing in almost all cases lehigh abroad takes no responsibility for student housing as a result students often find arrangements have not been properly made for them and do not find a place to live until they are actually in the country they are visiting application procedure students who are qualified have not always been admitted to the programs because the appli cation process was disorganized and vague petitioning for programs to be approved lehigh abroad usually dis courages students from petition ing to participate in programs not on the preapproved list tuition students who go abroad must always pay lehigh tuition even if the program in which they are enrolled costs less grade transferral until recently grades and credits transferred from some abroad programs while only cred its transferred from others this presented a problem in creating an equal academic standard for all lehigh students the grade transferral policy has been revised by lehigh abroad • • • lehigh abroad a division of the office of international education is where interested students can go to find out about studying abroad it is a resource center with an abundance of information on approved pro grams overseas cas sowa lehigh abroad program officer runs the office and guides students interested in going abroad he lets them know what programs are approved gives them general iniormation about how to go about studying abroad and explains the applica tion procedure to them sowa also helps students answer the most essential ques tion of all is going abroad right for them students must go through a preliminary application proce dure at lehigh before their appli cations are forwarded to the insti tutions abroad or to the american university that is running the abroad program depending on where they want to study stu dents may be asked to have an interview at lehigh as well sowa works with a committee that includes six voting faculty members the committee over see zacday page 8 sec students page 4 ml flak the softball team fell short in its bid to win a fifth consecutive patriot league title see page 20 spring football 16 baseball 17 men's lacrosse 19
