the brown and white l^ehigh university s student newspaper founded in 1894 vo |. 1 04 no 4 1 friday april 18 1997 all the lchigh news first fight closes opening ceremonies by audrey aloi news writer opening ceremonies of greek week were marred when police were forced to close the festivities early due to fights that broke out among frater nity members members oi two fraternities were taken to the hospital with injuries brian paulen 98 president ol delta tau delta fraternity said there are no hard feelings between delts and sigma phi epsilon fraternity regarding the incident the altercation was an unfortu nate incident and something that won't happen again paulen said jeff klein 98 president oi sigma phi epsilon said the incident got out of hand personally i'm not agry at delts klein said the incident was not intentional and i'm only upset that our house was thrown out of greek week the only event that took place was the banner presentation colorful ban ners and displays of gymnastic talent were presented to the judges among the sororities alpha b&w photo by shane marquess fiji brothers dressed as natives during opening ceremonies monday in sayre park asian expo week raises issue of diverse cultures by m umar rahman news writer asian expo week provided workshops and presentations in an effort to raise asian-american awareness on campus this week the asian cultural society along with the help of the chinese cultural club the indian students association and anime eki a club that explores japanese animation helped in the effort to feature more than just greek life john lu 98 president of the ccc said it's important for the lehigh campus to learn about asian culture each club was able to use one day this week to provide the cam pus with greater knowledge about its respective culture the lehigh community was invited monday to take part in making the famous chinese treat dumplings students and faculty prepared and ate this chinese cui sine in dravo hall emily lao 98 acs secretary said the event had a good turnout it was especially neat to see that a stall member came and joined us lao said later that evening the film rumble in the bronx was shown by acs in an attempt to give the campus a film with a bit of an asian viewpoint "' rumble in the bronx was just to promote the asian perspec tive alice chin 99 acs vice president of social affairs said sadami harada 98 a lehigh student from japan was pleased to see her country's culture repre sented in a positive way it's nice to see a presentation that isn't the stereotypical japanese animation harada said festival of china featured traditions such as martial arts cooking and arts and crafts wednesday in beardslee house a special workshop on stereo types of south asian american youth was presented by nilima patel a member of the national coalition building institute saturday's auction and semi formal dance will help raise money for the hoe ngyuen schol arship fund b w photo by alex strit kler stacey stein 00 particpated in the dunk tank theta dunks for needy children by killian o'connor news writer kappa alpha theta sorori ty held its annual dunk tank competition to raise money for court appointed special advocate on tuesday all proceeds from the event go to theta's national philantropy casa an organi zation that supplies assistance and legal representation to children in court most of these children are victims of abuse or neglect sororities and fraternities entered teams of tour people one potential dunkee and three throwers each were given 15 chances to hit a target located beside the dunk tank atop of which the dunkee sits it the target's bull's eye was hit the dunkee tell into the tank it a number of see greek page 6 see theta page 6 *•%' - - **~~- r y the baseball team beat moravian 15-4 tuesday see page 24 sports 20-24 men's tennis 21 golf 22 women's lacrosse 23 softball 24 phi sig held its first annual grand prix tricycle race tuesday see page 4 news 1-6 world news briefs 2 singled out 3 robert ashburner 4 victims of war 5 pi beta phi 6 lehigh's campus is unequipped to handle people with handicaps see page 9 ufestyle 9-16 culture corner 10 horoscope/review 11 crossword 14 n ot just a face 15 & e an gould of england llck ed and affixed 450 in four minutes d nnov 24 1995 f 6 the 1 7 guinness book of records
