the brown and white lehigh university s student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 104 no 38 tuesday april 8 1997 all the lehigh news first by jennifer o'brien news writer women toast to 25 years on campus the transition of lehigh from an all-male to a co-educational institution was commemorated friday by the 25th anniversary celebration of undergraduate women the celebration organized by a subcommittee of the 25th anniversary committee of undergraduate women at lehigh was among numerous activities geared toward helping students appreci ate the diversity they receive on a co-ed campus friday's event began at zoellner arts center where a crowd including students faculty alumni and trustees were entertained by the peter fluck trio dining was followed by a recognition ceremony in baker hall during which the audience saw a presentation about how the decision to admit women as undergraduates was made and how it has changed lehigh over the past 25 years susan yee 82 a member of the anniversary committee related a humorous anecdote about a trustee who upon wandering into the i baw photo by halue bloch of undergraduate women spoke to the audience friday recipients meet faces behind scholarships by tracy suro news writer the 11th annual scholarship dinner was held thursday night in lacocca hall to unite student scholarship recipients with their donors the event was coordinated by the financial aid office as a way for students and donors to establish a relationship caroline clifford co-coordinator of the event said donors travelled from out of town to meet the students the first part of the evening was a recep tion held in the siegal gallery where stu dents and the donors mingled for many this was the first time the donor and student had ever met bill stanford director of the financial aid office spoke about the two-step process that went into determining who receives which scholarship in the program first we must determine which students have financial aid eligibility and then assign each of these students with the needed amount of money stanford said then in the fall we sit down with all of the financial scholarships money and forms and then try to identify which students match the criteria of each of the scholarships according to stanford many of the the scholarships have limitations and restric tions some are geographic and some depend upon a student's field of study stanford said there are about 2.2(h stu dents in the financial aid program and about 700 of those students receive one of b&w photo by sacha dumont ellen cogswell 99 doug applegate 00 christopher voce 98 kirsten anderer 97 and tara santoroski 00 attended the scholarship dinner chi psi hosts tournament for charity by m umar rahman news writer chi psi fraternity held its 11th annual three on-three charity basketball tournament saturday to raise money for a local child who suffers from multiple disabilities and must remain on a venti lator in order to survive chi psi brothers raised more than 1,000 for billy piskura during the tournament by selling raffle tickets and getting donations from alumni steve budge 99 co-chairman for the tourna ment said the event was a success our goal was to beat last year's money and it looks like we will double it budge said approximately 30 teams representing various fraternities supported the tournament that was held at chi psi brent godfrey 99 co-chair for the tourna ment said all the money raised goes to piskura and his family piskura was chosen as this year's benefactor after brothers of chi psi read about his condition in the health section of the morning call we try to be real serious about this cause because it means a lot to give money to his fami ly godfrey said the brothers were particularly eager to help piskura and his family because of their tough financial situation the family is in danger of having their insur ance cut so we're trying to help them financial ly godfrey said although the organizational process of the tournament requires a lot of time the brothers agreed that helping the child is well worth their hard efforts we've spent the last three weeks getting the event organized budge said it's a timely see women page 7 sec scholarship page 7 sec basketball paae 7 1 vj it ' jh j 1 â– the softball team won two games against monmouth thursday see page 18 sports 16-20 men's lacrosse 20 sports briefs 1 9 baseball 18 women's lacrosse 1 7 women's softball 1 6 guest speaker john pettegrew spoke about the life and work of merle curti see page 5 news 1-7 world news briefs 2 mike winslow 3 philharmonic 4 international night 5 scientists can't seem to agree whether nutrasweet is good or bad for your health see page 1 1 . lifestyle 9-11 science briefs 1 1 william christiensen of madison nj collected over 75,000 beer cans fr om 125 different countries source the 1997 guinness book of world records
