the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 all the lehigh news first vol 1 04 no 31 tuesday february 25 1997 ahn trio plays chamber music by lisa a jones assistant news editor the zoellner arts center con tinued its preview season with the ahn trio concert saturday night in baker hall violinist angella ahn and her two sisters cellist maria ahn and pianist lucia ahn who are twins comprise the ahn trio they per formed chamber music selections by composers such as haydn mendelssohn and beethoven for their encore the sisters played the beatles song hey jude before the concert the ahns worked with a trio group from lehigh they also performed for a group of about 20 children from bethlehem angella ahn enjoyed perform ing in baker hall the sound is very real she said there are some halls that mute the sound and halls that overly vibrate the sound what i loved about this hall is that the sound is very open beautiful and real angella said the size although large felt very intimate for making chamber music after the concert audience members including many stu dents and faculty members crowded around the sisters for autographs many people bought the trio's cd others just waited to congratulate the ahns on their successful performance alex weimer 97 was very impressed with the quality of the ahns concert it was a fantastic perfor mance and a pleasure to watch he said as they performed they expressed how they felt about the music weimer said the selec tions for the second half were very entertaining bruce lcfferts 00 enjoyed the concert which was the first event he had ever attended at the zoellner arts center i was impressed by their range of time period and music lefferts said lefferts also said zoellner itself was an important part of the appeal of the performance the quality of the facility attracts people he said weimer also thinks the arts center is attracting more students to arts events you can already see the num ber of students at these concerts on a saturday night it's growing and will continue to grow weimer said this is just an indication of what's to come in three or four years he said zoellner is creat ing a cultural social atmosphere the concert by the ahn trio was also the first performance that derek ong 99 attended at lehigh ong was impressed by the trio's versatility i was overwhelmed by their musical ability ong said it was a great performance because they were able to go so easily from the work of classical com posers such as mendelssohn to broadway pieces by gershwin and rodgers the ahn trio was the grand prize winner of the 1992 alliance northeast competition for chamber ensembles they also won first prize in the coleman chamber music competition and were finalists in the naumburg chamber music competition the sisters graduated from the juilliard school and are members of the faculty of music at maple mount college in kentucky the trio tours throughout north first winterfest seen as a success for rha by chris faile news writer lehigh's first winterfest spon sored by the residence hall association was a series of events held this past week as temperatures started to rise in the lehigh valley the winterfest activities were all based around the theme of winter activities held over the three days included a showing of the movie the cutting edge a night of skat ing at the lehigh valley ice arena and a day of skiing at blue mountain ski area winterfest was put together by rha president kelly mcdade 98 and rha treasurer marea weber 99 with the assistance of rha vice president jason horn 99 and rha secretary rob emanuele 98 winterfest takes the place of the rha-sponsored fallfest which was held in previous years fallfest was cancelled this year at the last minute when a new executive board was formed weber said in preparing the activities for winterfest rha planned for the pos sibility of a mild winter since we didn't know if we would actually have snow rha decided to plan events which would n't depend on the weather weber said weber thought the first winterfest was a success and she is hoping rha will hold it again next year with the turnout we received video and discussion workshop intend ed to help professors improve their teaching skills was held at the university center thursday dina wills faculty develop mental coordinator and assistant professor of journalism and com munication was the facilitator of the workshop about integrating different kinds of teaching and learning styles wills said the concepts pre sented in the workshop are obvi ous to most people but the con cepts have many applications it sounds like common sense that people can learn in different ways wills said one can blend different teaching styles to acco madate different learning styles the teaching styles that she talked about stemmed from a model called the meyers-briggs this model uses different cate gories that address the needs of all personality types the model consists of adjec tives that describe the personality wills said these types are then used to design teaching strategies i'm not sure if this thing is to be taken very seriously but there is some validity to it wills said some of the learning styles that wills spoke about included participant avoidant dependent competetive and collaborative it is imperative that a profes sor realize that there are students with different learning styles out there wills said wills spoke about the different teaching styles that can be used to accomodate the students under different circumstances they included the expert delegator formal authority facilitator and personal models it is necessary to blend some of these styles to reach the stu dents wills said the video that wills showed presented two clips containing examples of the teaching styles that can be employed in different kinds of classroom situations one example was a clip from a large physics class the professor see concert page 8 see
