the brown and white l^high university s student newspaper founded m 1894 vox 1 04 no 30 friday february 21,1 997 all the lehigh news first research course combines specialties by killian o'connor news writer lehigh's highly successful integrated product development program has opened its doors to the college of arts and sciences allowing a greater variety of stu dents to participate m real world design projects the program which was awarded the 1996 american society of mechanical engineers curriculum innovation award began m the spring of 1994 pure ly as a mechanical engineering course it now groups students from the engineering business and arts and sciences colleges into teams that work on real design projects supplied by indus try sponsors including chrysler black and decker and exxon more than 200 students and approximately 25 faculty mem bers are participating m the ipd program this year a committee of experts made up of john ochs professor of mechanical engineering and mechanics todd watkins assis tant professor of business and economics and berrisford boothe associate professor of art and architecture work with the industry sponsors to develop the projects and to make the neces sary resources available to the students involved the course demands a con sistent workload and participants need to be energetic and dedicat ed watkins said students need to be willing to tackle uncertainty and be self-directed a summer course introducing the third discipline into the pro gram was used as a pilot to see how it would work the teams that took part m the summer pro gram had three months instead of the two semesters regularly allot ted to the program to produce results and watkins said they were successful gabe grifoni 99 was on a summer team that worked with a futuristic chair prototype called the dupont corian lounge chair created by eastoner hoey we made a few adjustments on the original including thc grade of thc steel used the slope of the back and replacing the per manent rollers with removable ones grifoni said the team also worked on developing a business plan for thc chair and did market analysis for profitable design options the chair has gone on to receive critical acclaim and is presently louring the country appearing m art and design shows hoey has received a grant from the benjamin franklin technical center located on mountaintop campus speakers weigh the merits of ebonics by m umar rahman news writer three african-american specialists offered their views on ebonics and problems related to communication within the black community monday m perella auditorium deforest soaries pastor of the first baptist church of lincoln gardens dr william scott professor and chairman of the african american studies depart ment at lehigh and don lyons president of lane one incorporated and a coach for the new jersey orators all spoke about the controversial topic of ebonics that has recently come to the forefront m the media the media misses the point when dealing with ebonics soaries said the question is not whether or not ebonics is a language but if it's possible for a person to survive and have access to the same opportunities as everyone else if he or she is unable to speak stan dard english according to soaries it is crilical lo leach african-americans standard english m order for them to compete on the same playing field as others each of the three speakers agreed on the importance of developing better lan guage communication skills within the african-american community in the inner city we don't see the use of standard english scott said there is no expectation to move beyond the confines of the hood b w photo by jeremy al key don lyons spoke about the importance of education and communication skills monday retired professor passes away by elizabeth burnham news writer professor emiritus of history c leon tipton died thursday feb 6 tipton was a faculty member m the history department from 1964 until 1993 he was a very warm and gregarious per son professor roger simon the history department chairperson said he was good company really witty tipton taught a variety of history courses while at lehigh . his favorite subject to teach was medieval history simon said he had a very popular course m it stephen cutcliffe professor of science technology and society had tipton as a pro fessor while he was m graduate school at lehigh before accepting a job to leach here he described tipton as having a very laid back personality professor tipton was low-keyed he said tipton often taught by telling detailed sto ries and students enjoyed his descriptions of life m the past he always told us interesting anecdotes about monks and popes from that time peri od cutcliffe said simon said tipton always put a great deal of time and effort into preparing for each of his classes he was a traditional lecturer simon said he was a very good professor when asked about the kind of professor tipton was cutcliffe responded with an anec dote about a class that he attended when i came to lehigh it was at a time when students were clamoring for teacher evaluations cutcliffe said professor tipton came m one week and started lecturing on a man called king robert i of england he told us all about king robert's life economic policies and family history culcliffe said all of the students were scribbling down notes m their notebooks about this king cutcliffe said after he was done professor tipton packed up his things and left the class room we all found out later that there never was a king robert i of england and the facts that tipton had told us about thc king were actually facts about himself kind of his own teacher evaluation this joke was consistent with the impres sion tipton's colleagues had of him simon said he was a popular lecturer with a wry sense of humor tipton also developed practical skills out side the classroom and these skills were an important part of his life and his
