the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vo . 04 no 28 friday february 7 1997 all the lehigh news first week focuses on eating disorders by elizabeth cohen news writer discussions and information sessions were held this week to educate students about the effects of eating disorders beth r golden assistant director of coun seling services said the counseling center has sponsored eating disorders awareness week in the past this year we have tried to broaden the scope of people's awareness golden said the theme of this week was don't weight your self-esteem because we want people to realize that although eating disorders affects only a small percentage of the population most women don't accept their bodies according to the american psychiatric association eating disorders — including anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa — affect a half-million people and are most common among middle to upper-middle class females the association also says 95 percent of the people who have eating disorders are between the ages of 12 and 25 there is increasing evi dence that men are also affected by disorders bulimia may accompany anorexia or it can strike alone people who suffer from bulimia frequently have severe eating binges eating enormous amounts of food then vomiting according to the american psychiatric association some psychiatrists theorize that eating disorders stem from the distorted body image our culture emphasizes golden said although treatment for eating disorders is a long tedious process there are many resources for sufferers we had a nutrition and exercise informa tion session because we want people to know that being healthy eating right and exercising is okay golden said losing perspective and losing control is dangerous it is one thing to be fit it's another thing to be compulsive and live an unbalanced life golden said denying treatment to those with eating dis orders leads to malnutrition irregular heart beat heart failure osteoporosis medical com plications and death from starvation jackie oring 00 attended some of the information sessions and said eating disorders are prevelant on college campuses the fact that this university is addressing the issue of eating disorders may make stu dents feel there is a supportive environment if they have an eating disorder oring said the activities of the week have been very informative for students the lehigh counseling center t.a.l.q peer educators women's studies program residence life panhel and the women's center are sponsoring eating disorders awareness week successful rush favors sororities by lisa a jones assistant news editor sorority rush ended last wednesday eight days after it began with bids offered to women rushees rush was held two weeks later in the semester than it has been held in previous years the change was made so the process coincided with the housing lottery another change in the process this spring was that rushees who received a bid will have a week to accept it in past years bids had to be accepted the same day they were received amy mikitka 97 panhellenic rush chair was pleased with rush this semester it was a really good year she said things went smoothly mikitka said the number of women registered for rush was slightly higher than it has been in other years it's nice to see so many worn b&w photo by chris faile sisters of kappa alpha theta sorority welcome new members at their dravo residence wednesday phi beta delta inducts members by m umar rahman news writer students committed to global advancement were inducted into phi beta delta honor society tuesday in lacocca hall more than 30 students from different colleges were honored for being international scholars those inducted were from for eign countries as well as the united states students ranged from americans who had studied a year or semester abroad to those who came to lehigh from foreign countries for an education phi beta delta society focus es on global and international academic achievement said james schmotter dean of the college of business and economics and president of lehigh's chapter of this interna tional organization the ceremony featured the keynote address of h edward muendel 64 president of stanton chase international and lehigh university trustee muendel congratulated the newly initiated members of the organization and provided infor mation concerning the changes currently taking place in the glob al economy the global economy is mov ing toward the direction of becoming one single market muendel said according to muendel his experience in international busi ness has shown him the way com panies are advancing there has been a significant change in the way companies are operating their businesses differ ing from the past he said muendel emphasized the way companies are now treating employees as a variable cost as opposed to a fixed cost because of the new atmos phere in the business world muendel advised students to broaden their scope you cannot plot your career on a single path anymore muendel said it's necessary to be willing to change and have a fall-back position citing europe as his example muendel spoke of the way execu tives are not necessarily from their native countries nationalistic ties are being broken down and you see across the border executives from differ ent countries muendel said after listening to the keynote address students were honored by the presentation of medals and certificates for the work that they have performed with the addition of this year's members phi beta delta which began at lehigh in 1992 currently consists of more than 100 students ednan sheikh 98 was hon ored to become a new member of phi beta delta through organizations
