the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 tuesday february 4 1997 all the lehigh news first p 104 no 27 by patrick doherty news editor comedian's humor brings laughter comedian steve shaffer performed to a capacity crowd at the ulrich student center saturday night shaffer who has appeared on mtv the tonight show and murphy brown gave the performance as part of the series of come dians sponsored by university productions for the spring semester shaffer's act was full of humorous stories and observations about college marriage and other subjects while talking about college shaffer took a look at the strange exchange rates set by col lege book stores you buy a book for 95 and sell it back for eight cents shaffer said where does the depreciation occur shaffer also tried to help bring an end to lehigh's nickname controversy he ridiculed the idea that the mountain hawk was chosen to replace the engineer in order to overcome gender stereotypes there are female engineers and there are female mountain hawks shaffer said so where is the controversy shaffer talked briefly about popular music and said he was unusually susceptible to get ting songs stuck in his head tve had that crash test dummies song stuck in my head for 18 months he said on a more domestic side shaffer talked about marriage and the differences between men and women these differences accord ing to shaffer are mainly in standards of cleanliness and personal hygiene shaffer told the audience that when he got married he found that his home was sudden ly crammed with bags of potpourri his wife told him that the potpourri bags were used to disguise unpleasant odors i don't think it's any coincidence that most of those bags were near my things shaffer said another personal problem shaffer talked about was his weight he said he did not mind being overweight and complained about peo ple who tried to get him to slim down he said people would often ask him if the extra weight didn't make him feel uncomfortable you know when i'm uncomfortable shaffer said when i'm hungry shaffer grew up in south philadelphia and by lisa a jones assistant news editor choral groups sing at baker the baker hall auditori um in the zoellner arts center was packed sunday for tell me a story an afternoon show for young people given by lehigh's choral arts and directed by steven sametz professor of music members of the lehigh community came to zoellner to be entertained by singing storytelling and dancing bethlehem residents also brought their children to see the performance the choir sang selections which included aglepta a swedish formula for warding off trolls and an irish tune a calling on song they also performed an italian folk song o come bali bene bela bimba which trans lates to o how well you dance beautiful maid elizabeth dimopoulos a bal lerina from the ballet guild of the lehigh valley gave a dance performance the overtones the 10 member vocal jazz group sang pieces titled i want to be a dog and i'm a train b&w photo by mike weiss the overtones sang jazz pieces at baker hall auditorium in the zoellner arts center sunday they and other performers entertained students and bethlehem residents survey reveals widespread cheating * some names have been changed to protect identity david walked into his physics final tired and ragged after only two hours sleep he had acciden tally set his alarm for 7 p.m instead of 7 a.m so he was almost late for his 8 10 a.m exam halfway through the exam the batteries on david's calculator ran out he turned it over hoping to gain a few more minutes of life by rubbing the batteries in his calculator case he found the 3x5 note card he had used to study the night before the card held information formulas theo ries and names it was the infor mation david needed i thought why not i was failing the class at thc time david said i'm not sure if a good grade on the final would have brought my grade up but i wasn't thinking straight i used the card to answer some of the questions on the exam a few minutes later the pro fessor stopped to inspect david's calculator he flipped it over and could tell immediately that it wasn't working he suspected i was doing something dis honest david said i found out later that he didn't have any proof i was cheating but i turned in my test out of guilt anyway the professor gave david an f for the class and turned the case over to the university david pleaded guilty and is now serving his second of two semesters on academic probation • • • david is unlike many lehigh students but not because he cheated david is one of the exceptions because he got caught in an anonymous survey of 450 lehigh students 6 percent said they had not performed any act of cheating in the past 12 months ninety four percent said they had com mitted at leas.t one act that constitutes cheating at least one time in the past 12 months although cheating is highly prevalent in classes faculty often are unaware of its widespread occurrence in an anonymous sur vey of 120 full-time professors 5 percent said they had never encountered a student cheating in their careers at lehigh and 38 percent said they had encountered two or fewer students cheating in their entire careers at lehigh clearly some students are getting away with far more than their pro fessors realize • • • dr raymond bell chairman of the education and human ser vices department has served on lehigh's disciplinary committee for a total of 1 2 years i've seen scores if not hun dreds of cheating cases and the most common reaction students have is it was the pressuze i suc cumbed to the pressure " bell wrestling wins against clarion and drexel but loses to edinboro see page 20 sports 16-20 track and
