from the cam pus percy l sadler director o athletics has announced tha this fall the packers will trair at vacation valley echo lake in the pocono mountains the team under the tutelagt of william b leckonby will as semble at taylor gymnasiun august 29 for a week of drill preparatory to encamping fo echo lake september 7 th squad will remain there for ar additional two - week traininj period prior to the commence ment of the fall semester sep tember 23 coach leckonby and his as sistants had their first look a this year's charges wednesdaj after a successful freshmai season the sophomores are ex pected to provide the veterai lettermen with some stiff com petition in the battle for start ing berths the nine-game season wi open saturday september 2 at lancaster pa with frank lin and marshall college pre viding the opposition this year's team stacks up a a speedy aggregation th coaching staff agrees that i great deal depends on the abil ity of the sophomores to prov themselves dimmick reporter summer workshop weekly offers teachers unusual opportunity the rochester philharmonic orchestra will give two concerts april 23 1949 the student con certs-lecture series committee announced a special school children's concert will be presented that morning in grace hall guy fraser harrison conducting the evening concert for le high students will be presented under the direction of erich leinsdorf only a limited num ber of tickets will be available to the public the children's concert was made possible through the com bined efforts of the orchestra officials and joseph ricapito director of instrumental music in the bethlehem public schools there was a great demand for such a program on the part of school children following the successful appearance of the detroit symphony orchestra oldtimecomediesdelighttwo large audiences wednesday tribulations of the poor fresh man who makes good.in the end lloyd kept the audience eithe in stitches or on the edge o their seats as he got himself ii and out of the kind of funn situations that modern com edies seem unable to approach behind his traditional horn rimmed glasses he comes t college determined to take thi and cheer the hero night for a near capacity audi ence of summer students facul ty and friends who roared their approval of a program of me morable american comedy films sponsored by the student con certs-lectures series committee in packard laboratory the highlight of the evening was the freshman starring harold lloyd in the trials and the two-hour program was made up of old time films taken from the museum of modern art film library dating back to 1908 the films included the doctor's secret a comedy cen tered about a reducing machine designed to make fat men slim gertie the dinosaur one of the first cartoon pictures the skeleton dance another car toon and the sex life of the polyp a pointed lecture by robert benchley on the life of the sponge shop talk weekly publication of the summer workshop for teachers affords teachers an opportunity rarely encountered during their professional ca reers after handling young sters with amazing self-control for nine months out of a year teachers attending the summer workshop good-naturedly turn on the principal dr w george hayward director of the work shop and principal of elmwood elementary school east orange n j their favorite comments are aimed at the color of dr hayward's ties edited by a staff composed of nine women and one man with dr robert a bream associate weekly editions are resumes of lectures delivered by visiting specialists summaries of new teaching techniques announce ments of coming events and lecture schedules covering ap pearances of persons specializ ing in educational theory and practice besides dr bream members of the editorial staff are marian colver and ada zellner co-edi tors kay behrens art editor and edith boyd dorothy chub buck margaret chubbuck mary mahoney martha dimmick jane morris and howard deis cher reporters professor of education at le high acting as advisor shop talk combines friendly humor with the more serious aspects of the training program lec tures delivered by prominent persons in the education field as well as a survey of problems which arise during the course of handling pupils are discussed these are tempered with such features as shock talk in which no member of inter viewing october graduates dur ing the week of july 19 for openings in time study produc tion schedule process engineer ing and mechanical problems ( continued on page 3 six vacancies appeared in the laurel street housing unit re cently and almost immediately there were 100 applications for the apartments the set-up at lehigh remains tight with no relief predicted the campus bureau blames con
