the brown and white lehigh university s student newspaper founded in 1894 ijo4 no 23 all the lehigh news first friday december 6 1 996 phi beta kappa inducts members by derek robinson news writer twenty-seven students were initiated into the phi beta kappa arts and sciences honor society at a dinner in the university center tuesday night kristin schubert 96 a molec ular biology major inductee thought the initiation went well there was a lot of symbolism about phi beta kappa that i did not know about she said schubert said the evening began with initiation and moved on to everyone taking an oath and making acceptance speeches following the induction was a reception and a speech by history professor michael g baylor schubert felt baylor's symbolic speech titled the jurist and the cabinet-maker hitler and two obscure germans related to the symbolism of phi beta kappa james b hobbs magee pro fessor emeritus of business administration and treasurer of the lehigh chapter of phi beta kappa said the society recog nizes high academic performance phi beta kappa looks for aca demically well-qualified stu dents hobbs said while it is not limited to the top 10 percent of each class the students are usually in the top four to six per cent of their class a minimum grade point aver age of 3.5 is need to qualify in addition specific course require ments must be fulfilled performance in the spring of a student's junior year is the main period of qualification although the exceptionally sharp get in early hobbs said heather a jacene 96 a mol ecular biology major feels it's an honor to be invited to join being inducted results from a combination of all that you have done she said schubert is proud of phi beta kappa's history it is very cool to be part of this old fraternity she said i think its prestige lies in that it is so old and that is so value intellectual and academically orientated phi beta kappa was found in 1776 at the college of william and mary lehigh is the 27th on zetes good scholars receive recognition by jen kucharski news writer the 7th annual zeta psi good scholar election came to a close on nov 25 as the brothers of zetes pre sented awards to three candidates and their organizations a record-breaking number of 64 candidates and organizations partici pated in this year's election which raised a total of 21 000 to be donated to the american cancer society since the good scholar election began in 1990 a total of 90,000 has been raised by the annual charity drive joanna katzman 99 received the title of good scholar for raising 2,050 katzman who won the grand prize of a caribbean cruise represented the lehigh hillel society i participated in the good scholar election because i wanted to raise money for a good cause said katzman i wasn't expecting to win anything it was a nice surprise mark roberge 98 was the first place winner of the election but as a zetes brother roberge was ineligible to be named the official good scholar the election requires participating organizations to nominate a candidate and submit a 100 entrance fee the cost to vote is 1 and the candi date who raises the most money and gets the most votes is named the winner as a zetes brother i was very proud to promote the good scholar election nate laver 99 said i encouraged a lot of people to vote this b w photo by michelle heyse as christmas draws nearer bethlehem is decorating to celebrate the holiday season students react to new housing policy by kathy calogredes news writer during the 1997-98 school year both sophomores and freshmen will be guaranteed on-campus housing this change to housing policy was made in january when the residential environment report was released some students however are not aware of this change or how it will affect their housing arrangements if they select on-campus hous ing according to ozzie breiner associate director of residential services in order to remain competitive within the patriot league schools guaranteeing sopho mores housing was something lehigh had to do breiner said for some freshmen such as jason williams 00 this change has made their decisions about whether to enter the residen tial life lottery a little easier i'll enter the lottery now for sure williams said i was thinking i wanted to stay on campus anyway mainly because of the lan ability the wired project i'm glad that i don't have to worry about where i'm going to live next year additional housing will be provided for stu dents in response to demand a new residence hall is under construction but it will not be ready until the fall of 1998 the new hall which will be located to the west of sigma alpha mu fraternity will house 150 students bremer said the intention of the residence section of the rer was to give everyone a chance to make a choice regarding their living arrangements timing of residential life housing decisions and fraternity bids now coincide residential services director david joseph said the
