olympic manager cliff keen university of michigan dr shields dies promoted lehigh bach choir 43 years honorary doctor of music degree from muhlenburg college surviving him are his wife the former emilie schultze daughter of rev augustus schultze a former president of moravian college and theologi cal seminary three daughters mrs colin l ward aruba netherland west indies mrs boyd king prince frederick md and mrs thomas e but terfield jr bethlehem and two sisters mrs charleton mur phy philadelphia and mrs stanley brown detroit the 16 man olympic wrest ling team coached by art grif fith of oklahoma a & m ar rived on the campus saturday afternoon to inaugurate a strict training grind which will cul minate in the choice of the men who will represent the united states in the olympic games to be held in london this summer of particular interest to local wrestling fans is the first sched uled meet which will be open to the public saturday evening july 10 at 8 o'clock in grace hall this is the first in a series of tryout matches to de termine the final contestants and the only opportunity amer ican fans will have to see the prospective finalists in action prior to the departure over seas selected after rigorous com petition in district olympic try outs a a u and n c a a tournaments navy eliminations and the final olympic tryouts the current squad is loaded with mid-western talent six of the candidates represent lowa col leges gerald leeman william koll and william nelson of lowa state teachers college leo thomsen cornell college of iowa glenn brand lowa state college and joe scarpello uni versity of lowa completing the mid-western nucleus are verne gagne university of minnesota and bob maldegan michigan state college griffith who has guided the oklahoma aggies through seven consecutive undefeated seasons since 1941 has three of his own pupils on the squad bill jer nigan hal moore and bill hut ton rounding out the squad are leland christiansen uni versity of california malcolm mac donald and john fletcher of the navy henry wittenberg new york police sports associ ation and leland merrill new york athletic club continued on page 3 assisting griffith in the train ing program is cliff keen coach b & w photo by ramsey tom belmont 49 chairman of the recent lehi?h team m naming contest congratulates mr samuel harleman 01 one of the contributors of the winning name — the pack ers mr harleman requested that his share of the prize money s100 total be divided equally among the other winners the portrait on the wall is that of asa packer founder of lehigh uniersity dr t edgar shields profes sor emeritus of music and or ganist emeritus of the bach choir died suddenly sunday night from a heart attack at his home 10 e church st bethlehem following a celebra tion in observance of his 71st birthday succeeding dr j fred wolle as organist and choirmaster in 1905 dr shields had been as sociated with the department of music until his retirement july 1 1947 prior to his resig nation oct 26 1944 he had served the bach choir for a period of 43 years long regarded as an authority on bach dr shields was instru mental in bringing to bethle hem the interest and acclaim that has been associated with the annual bach festivals among his many contributions to the cultural life of the city were his services as organist and choirmaster of the pro cathedral church of the nativ ity since 1901 and professor of music at moravian college and seminary for women since 1909 in june 1935 he received an dr whitaker named to asee military committee dr martin d whitaker pres ident of lehigh university has been named a member of the committee of military affairs of the american society for engineering education the le high administrator was notified of his selection by s s stein berg president of the associa tion the committee is to keep in touch with the developments in the nation's armed forces par ticularly as they effect students and faculty members in the col leges of engineering the lehigh university brown an d wh ite ifihe brown and white wiil n \ bef i published every friday y during thfe^sunijmer haif or shigestfifßr tromy our a * readere>^fa^l|^roß r
