the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 104 no 22 tuesday november 26 1 996 all the lehigh news first new courses offer wide variety by casey bahrenburg news writer the college of arts and sciences is offering a variety of new courses for undergraduate students interested in anything from poetry to the automobile industry next semester some courses include american poems mostly for fun engl 191 deep play doing myth and ritual at lehigh rel 197 friendship love and the other phil 291 and german science and literature in the age of vision mfl 295 art king professor of eco nomics and anthony o'brien associate professor of economics are teaching economics of the automobile industry this course traces the devel opment of the automobile indus try from its origins at the turn of the 20th century up to the present king is looking forward to teaching the course because he has always had a^pecial interest in transportation it's one of the few topics that i must say has far-ranging interest for me far beyond the classroom because my hobby has always been cars king said the course will be taught in seminar format offering hands-on opportunities for students students are going to be pre senting information every day so this will not be a lecture course he said students will have to read material and then in class we will discuss it we will even have outside speakers come in to address the class another seminar being offered is economics of the sports industry eco 95 which will be taught by both vincent munley department chairperson of eco nomics and joe sterrett director of athletics scott dunlap 98 said this particular course sounds more interesting than average courses i think all of the new courses show how the college of arts and sciences has excelled within the university dunlap said eco 95 ties together two very important aspects of my life including sports and economics alexis ohls 98 an inter national business major and french minor preregistered for communicative french fren 208 in which she will be able to examine topics related to the study of business and economics the class is being taught via satellite from lafayette college ohls said i could not be tak ing a better course this spring to wrap up my career at lehigh i have studied international business for four years and in this course i will be able to apply both areas of my concentration in an advanced technical style odk honors society inducts new members by christine karkazis news writer omicron delta kappa the national leadership honor society inducted 34 new members wednesday night in kenner theater the new members represent the odk ideal which recognizes those who have attained a high standard of success in their college life according to bernie stabinski 97 president of odk all the odk mem bers have achievements in curricular and extra-curric ular activities stabinski began the ceremony by explaining the b&w photo by ashley merlin students showed their spirit as they cheered lehigh to a 23-19 victory at the game saturday see lehigh-lafayette photo spread on pages 4-5 and complete game coverage on page 20 smoke-out urges lu to put out habit by lisa jones news writer smokers across the coun try took a step to kick their habit thursday the american cancer society sponsored the annual great american smoke-out urging smokers not to smoke for the day the health center set up a table in the ulrich student center to inform students about the event and spread awareness about the dangers of smoking chip kratzinger 98 an employee at the health center helped distribute information for the program the purpose of smoke out day is to urge people to quit smoking he said if you can stop for one day you can hopefully stop for good in the future volunteers urged passer by's to spin the smoker's roulette wheel to see what harmful effect or disease they could get by smoking lollipops and gum were given to students who com mitted to a smoke-free day tracy barbagiovanni 98 was one of the volun teers who helped organize the event i think a lot of students who come to college tend to start smoking because of the social atmosphere here she said there are no parents here to prevent you from smoking or tell you not to i think it's important for students to encourage other students not to smoke barbagiovanni said volunteers handed out pamphlets from the amer ican cancer society detail ing what happens to the lungs of a person who devel ops emphysema and cancer the pamphlets also in cluded information about the effects second-hand smoke can have on non-smokers a sheet distributed with suggested tips on how to quit smoking for good from the coalition for a smoke-free valley in allentown some of the tips are
