the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol jo4 no 21 friday november 22 1996 all the lehigh news first by sarah herchel news writer lecture focuses on women in cuba marifeli perez-stable professor of soci ology and chairwoman of the program in politics economics and society at the state university of new york spoke about women's roles in cuban society wednesday in maginnes hall i don't really look at women as a sub ject of study but instead i look at their rela tionship to the political system perez stable said perez-stable is the first speaker of the series women and change in latin america which is taking place throughout the year the series is sponsored by the international center for democracy and social change the latin american studies program and the women's studies program this is the program's third year perez-stable organized her lecture around cuba's political history beginning in the 19505 it has not been easy for anyone and especially difficult for women since the u.s embargo perez-stable said she spoke about how the 1960 cuban revolution and the support of fidel castro relates to women at this time cuba had a new vision of politics with unity rather than diversity and affirmation rather than diversity perez stable said according to perez-stable it was during this period that the federacion de mujeres cubanas was mandated the fmc was a successful institution which brought together all of the women's organizations throughout cuba perez-stable said this organization gave women euphoria and hope in the 19605 the fmc worked with prostitutes and household servants to make their societal roles almost non-existent the fmc flourished even more in the 19705 perez-stable said the fmc mandated by communism was an affirmitive action type of policy perez stable it promoted women to the leadership positions across the cuban society fmc boosted women's leadership posi tions from six percent to 25 percent in just the myth the maze the essence of this community garden lies in the collaborative effort and commitment to an idea that people working together can accomplish great things said anthony viscardi bethlehem community tuesday to commemorate the ribbon cutting of the garden the myth the maze diving coach charged with assault by sarah zabrenski editor in chief chris marshall lehigh's swimming and diving coach was charged with hitting his wife in a dispute at their home in hanover township marshall was charged with simple assault and harassment on nov 7 he was arraigned and released on his own recog nizance marshall also has a tem porary restraining order against him which prevents him from returning to his home according to the nov 13 edi tion of the morning call marshall's wife lori told police at the colonial regional police department her husband struck her and threw her onto a cement floor lori marshall was taken to st luke's hospital and was treated and released according to the morning call marshall released a statement proclaiming his innocence i have done nothing wrong and believe i will be vindicated of these charges marshall said he declined further comment on the advice of his attorney marshall's father robert is on death row in new jersey after he was convicted in 1986 of hir ing three louisiana men to mur der his wife two years earlier the case was the subject of the book and television movie blind faith mark ericksoit dean of stu dents is a friend of marshall and believes marshall has been treat ed unfairly by the local press i have known chris marshall for the past 12 years both as a student and a staff member erickson said in a statement to the brown and white through out this time period chris has consistently demonstrated the highest integrity he is an out standing person and an extraordi nary friend it saddens me that the press has chosen to print this story before all of the facts can be told erickson said i trust that once the whole story is
