the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 104 no 19 friday november 15 1996 all the lehigh news first by patrick doherty news writer franklin lecture stirs controversy students learned about the myth and reality of benjamin franklin's romantic adventures in a lecture in sinclair auditorium tuesday i had a graduate student say to me now tell me is it true that franklin had 100 children and that's why his face is on the 100 dollar bill " carla mulford a professor at pennsylvania state university and the co-editor of heath anthology of american literature told her audience when mulford began doing research on franklin's life she was surprised to learn how many well-educated people believed some of the wilder stories of franklin's exploits mulford said while there is some truth to the sto ries that circulate about franklin's affairs with women the stories are often greatly exaggerated mulford used newspaper articles poetry and other writings produced during franklin's lifetime and in b&w photo by lesley schopp professor carla mulford of penn state university addressed the myths surrounding benjamin franklin in a lecture tuesday . news brief • bissey convicted of lookout murders a jury found 19-year-old christopher bissey guilty of first-degree murder in the lookout murders wednesday according to wkyw3 news bissey of salisbury township was on trial for the shooting deaths of bethlehem residents jennifer grider 17 and mary orlando 15 on june 29 1995 witnesses alleged bissey murdered the girls over a 400 cocaine debt grider owed him the jury how ever was not told of the possible motive police received an anonymous tip leading them to bissey a few days after the murder but he was not considered a strong suspect until december accord ing to the nov 13 edition of the morning call orlando's boyfriend kenneth dorney told police in december that grider told him the day before the murders that she had to meet bissey the next night at the lookout grider was afraid bissey would kill her dorney told police dorney was scheduled to appear as a witness for the prosecution but both sides decided not to request his testimony bissey did not take the stand in his own defense and testimony concluded on tuesday afternoon the jury took less than two hours to convict bissey of two counts of first-degree murder bissey faces either life in prison or death by lethal injection the jury was scheduled to announce its sentence yester day at 9:30 a.m operation bundle-up aids needy by kimberly shenberg news writer operation bundle-up a clothing drive will be sponsored by the omicron delta kappa honor society the gryphon society and the panhellenic council from nov 18 through dec 6 omicron delta kappa organized and ran the project alone last year this year panhel is giving greek support and the gryphon society is providing support from the resi dence halls for this charitable event bernie stabinski 97 is a member of the gryphon society and the president of omicron delta kappa we are more excited this year because there are three big groups working together he said the groups decided to aid this philanthropy because winter is near and they feel it is imper ative that the needy have warm clothing there are a lot of needy people in our area said kari herzog 97 vice president of omicron delta kappa we all have something we can give all of the clothing and blankets will be collected in boxes that have been donated by local food markets the campus book store and dining services the boxes will be positioned in academic buildings residence halls greek housing and public places such as the alumni memorial building the university center and the ulrich student center we will have to pick up the clothing every week if the drive is successful said jennifer brown 97 head of the public ser vice committee we have much better advertising this year so hopefully it will be a great success local charities on the south side will benefit from the recipients of operation bundle-up brown said it is almost wintertime and people with out money need warm clothing to survive brown said everybody should get involved and do something for the community women recognize negative advertising by jennifer o'brien news writer lehigh students were encouraged to be aware of the demeaning ways that the media often chooses to depict women during a seminar held monday in kenner theater mirror mirror reflections of women was sponsored by the panhellenic council and delta gamma sorority it was organized by beth golden assistant director of counsel ing services and madeleine langman a graduate student who is also affiliat ed with the counseling center the idea for the presentation was inspired by the activities scheduled for women's empowerment week as part of the continuing celebration of 25 years of women at lehigh this is actually something we've wanted to do for a long time golden said we really got motivated by plan ning the events for this week though the seminar consisted of a 30 minute slide presentation which was followed by a discussion encouraging audience members to voice their reac tions to the images they had just seen the slide show was put together to encourage students to think about the way in which society often views women as objects and how women are pressured into thinking that only a very narrow standard of beauty and attitude is acceptable golden said the images were divided into seven different categories with titles such as objects of beauty and never too rich or too thin each category depicted women in submis sive or provocative positions often using their bodies in an attempt to sell see franklin page 7 see mirror page 7 h_k the wrestling team held
