the brown and white jlehigh university s student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 104 no 15 tuesday november 5 1996 all the lehigh news first wright leaves sold-out crowd smiling by kevin schregel news writer steven wright a comedian who has appeared on the hit television show mad about you and in two hbo comedy spe cials brought his unique comedy act to 2,000 people saturday night in lower grace hall gabe grifoni 98 comedy chairman of university productions said the show was definitely the biggest comedy production held this semester at lehigh we at up comedy try to get one big name act to perform at lehigh each semes ter in addition to a few lesser-known come dy club comedians grifoni said wright who was fresh from an appear ance on the late show with david letterman at boston university on friday night entertained a more diverse audience than expected since the performance fell during freshman parents weekend both parents and students attended dave kapferer 00 attended the perfor mance with his parents the show was excellent kapferer said i had never seen steven wright perform before but i would definitely be interested in seeing him again kapferer's parents thought wright's comedy act was the perfect event to be held on parents weekend it really was a great show john kapferer said he really covered all of the age brackets the parents of jamie haenick 98 a member of up comedy committee also enjoyed the show i thought that the show was very funny doreene haenick said steven wright was very appropriate choice for parents week end entertainment wright's off-beat comedy routine ranged from his childhood experiences and customs officals to having fun with hitch hikers he began with the show by playing the guitar and later mixed new material with some older material the crowd gathered at lower grace also included many upperclassmen jon verdi 96 attended the perfomance and thought it was a great addition to the usual b w photo by shane marquess steven stole the show at lehigh university choral arts sold-out performance in packer chapel friday night the theme of the evening's program the devil you say secular sacred and spooky stories and music from around the world and beyond commemorated halloween and the fall season by using dramatic lighting and pyrotechnics to create an eerie atmosphere darlene dreyer 97 manager of the choral union said the the football game saturday see page 4 barry's book highlights russian trials by christine karkazis news writer donald d barry professor of political science recently co authored his 18th book politics and justice in russia major trials of the post-stalin era with russian journalist yuri feofanov barry said the book mainly focuses on all the important political trials that took place in the soviet union between the time of stalin and the soviet union's independence accord ing to barry the idea for the col laborative effort with a russian came after studying feofanov's career as a journalist i had been impressed with my colleague's work in russia for a long time barry said so when i met him at a lehigh con ference on soviet law in 1991 i asked him if he would like to col laborate on something barry and feofanov received a grant from the national council for soviet and east european research which provided ex penses for phone calls and travel between russia and the u.s while the authors were writing their book work on the book lasted sev eral years in 1995 barry trav eled to russia to finish his work with feofanov i wrote about the political atmosphere in which all of these trials took place barry said in the last chapter i tried to talk about truth telling and the desire to set the record straight espe cially when journalistic freedom is taken away feofanov's portion of the book focused on the actual court trials many of which he had covered as a journalist barry said because of russian laws during the com munist era feofanov could not always tell the full story when he covered trials the book allowed him to develop his analysis of the politi cal restrictions and censorship at the time of the trials barry said feofanov could say things now that he would not have said then richard matthews a lehigh political science professor found barry and feofanov's book to be insightful i think this is an absolutely fascinating book that should appeal to a wide audience
