intra-mural sing ing contest sponsored by the new york lehigh club which will be held tonight in drown memorial hall the public is invited to at tend and there will be no admis sion charge the program will consist of 45 selections each group required to present three songs one selection oy each ensemble is to be chosen irom the 1937 official lehigh uni versity song book the other songs will include fraternity songs bar ber shop quarter numbers sea chanteys spirituals and college numbers shields serves as judge from the group of 15 ensembles three will be chosen to compete in the finals dr t edgar shields professor emeritus of music at lehigh will serve as honorary judge other judges will be dr kenneth w lamson associate pro fessor of mathematics dr clar ence a shook professor of mech anics and william h schempf assistant professor of music twelve fraternity and three dormitory units have entered the competition and will sing during the elimination round arrange ments are being memorial debate prize in the con test final held in christmas-sau con may 14 wallace and robert wherry of sigma chi upheld the affirmative of resolved that all lehigh en gineering curricula be expanded to five years and that at least one year of the time be devoted entire ly to studies in liberal arts and defeated seemon pines and char les palmer of tau delta phi win ners of the 80 second prize both sophomores participating in their first debate contest wal lace and wherry built their argu ments on a three-cornered founda tion the present cultural lag of morals and ethics the lack of civ ic responsibility and the dissatis faction of industry with engineer ing graduate of today stress liberal education seniors pines and palmer main tained that the deficit in the engi neering lehigh's first campus-wide pop ular election of class officers will take place tomorrow and thurs day when men of the classes of 49 50 and 51 will cast their bal lots to determine their choice of their class leaders for the ensuing academic year seventy-four candidates nomin ated by petition are vying for twelve available positions these posts consist of the usual four offices in each of the three classes seniors will of course have no offices to fill polls open at 9 a.m voting will take place from 9 a m to 4:30 p m on wednesday and thursday polling places will be available during these anthem shout for joy ye ransomed band as the opening number on the pro gram so began the first of the three sections of the annual bach festi val presented for the 41st time may 14 and 15 the chapel was filled to capacity fo all three sec tions and saturday with a re prieve from the rain of the previ ous day 400 listeners flocked to the lawn outside of the chapel powerful performance bach enthusiasts the nation over hurried to the annual celebration blocking roads for blocks around the campus and giving bethle hem's harassed police force good reason for many headaches officer james mercker directing traffic at the intersection of packer and new streets could only sigh all bach means to me is horns and sore feet officer mercker however was for the most part alone in his sum mary of bach music for the per formance was reverent as a mass should be and intense as true de votion should be i wrestle and pray second of fering of the friday afternoon sec tion was well sung by the group dramatizing the difficult passages skillfully following was oh lord how long and thou very god and david's son neither of which attained the heights of the pre vious works the friday night section was composed of how brightly shines yon morning star lord are thine eyes not searching and beautify thyself my spirit all executed with the volume and depth for which the choral group is famous mass in b minor each presentation of the friday sections seemed to build up to the climax of the festival bach's massive mass in b minor in the past dr jones has been critisized for a seeming tendency to over dramatize his conducting however it must be realized that for music to be natural it must come as much from the personality of the con ductor as from the score itself what has been misconstrued by some as over-dramatization is in actuality a manifestation of his in tense love and understanding of bach's masterful music oustanding among thesoloists was bass mack harrell whose flow ing voice made of bach more than a tonal exercise or a physical fete soprano lura stover also excel led instilling not only through her voice but through her poise the dignity of the sacred music catalysis progress conference held leading investigators in the field of surface chemistry and catalysis representing both industry and universities attended the two-day adsorption conference on the cam pus on friday and saturday highlight of the conference was an open lecture on the role of pores in catalysts given by dr ahlborn wheeler of the e i dv pont de nemours company ex perimental station friday evening in the chemistry building topics for discussion on friday morning included brief review of discussions at amherst on heats of adsorption and bet theory and modifications interaction be printing ink research institute navy commissions open to graduates limited numbers of college graduates are being offered the op portunity of being commissioned as ensigns in naval aviation this spring and of receiving flight training the navy has announced in order to provide full informa tion to those who are interested a flying team of navy officers will visit lehigh university from fri day noon may 21 to saturday noon may 22 this is a career program in which college men with degrees who are between the ages of 18 and 25 will be taken in to the navy as commissioned of ficers flight 2:30 dr krueger the dean of ameri can conductors studied under ar thur nikish was a protege of fel ix weingartner and was associated with franz schalk director of the vienna opera although music is his first love dr krueger has interests ranging from championship prize fights to abnormal psychology his educa tion includes a liberal arts course at kansas university a law degree from heidelberg university and specialization in abnormal psy chology economics and higher mathematics caniff show is popular over 450 people from lehigh university and vicinity have visit ed the steve canyon exhibit by milton caniff during the first three days of showing the exhibition which is being held in the journalism division of drown hall consists mainly of original drawings by mr caniff the art work is divided into four classifications including black and white and color sketches for the steve canyon and male call miss lace cartoon strips photographs of the artist and his models and explanations of spring and of receiving flight training the navy has announced in order to provide full informa tion to those who are interested a flying team of navy officers will visit lehigh university from fri day noon may 21 to saturday noon may 22 this is a career program in which college men with degrees who are between the ages of 18 and 25 will be taken in to the navy as commissioned of ficers flight training will be at pensa cola florida frequently referred to as the annapolis of the air this will take from 18 to 24 months after which the officer pilots will join regular naval avia tion units 2:30 dr krueger the dean of ameri can conductors studied under ar thur nikish was a protege of fel ix weingartner and was associated with franz schalk director of the vienna opera although music is his first love dr krueger has interests ranging from championship prize fights to abnormal psychology his educa tion includes a liberal arts course at kansas university a law degree from heidelberg university and specialization in abnormal psy chology economics and higher mathematics caniff show is popular over 450 people from lehigh university and vicinity have visit ed the steve canyon exhibit by milton caniff during the first three days of showing the exhibition which is being held in the journalism division of drown hall consists mainly of original drawings by mr caniff the art work is divided into four classifications including black and white and color sketches for the steve canyon and male call miss lace cartoon strips photographs of the artist and his models and explanations of the engraving pro cesses used in newspaper repro duction work after successful showings in new york philadelphia chicago baltimore and other cities mr caniff's work has come to lehigh under the
