the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 104 no 11 friday october 11 1996 all the lehigh news first senate travels to washington d.c by jennifer kucharski news writer the student senate embarked on its annu al retreat to washington d.c last weekend to promote unity senate president doug herman 98 said the purpose of the trip was for the senators to get to know each other and learn to cooperate for a productive year the trip was an effort to help individuals grow in the three fields of leadership team work and communication and become better campus leaders so we can best represent the students of lehigh herman said the senate worked to achieve this goal through various workshops facilitated by the executive board in an attempt to improve communication skills the senators participat ed in a workshop in which they were forced to communicate non-verbally each person was given a different set of rules and then asked to play a game accord ing to these rules since everyone had dif ferent rules the senators were forced to find a compromise in order to successfully play the game in the leadership workshop students were divided into three different groups squares circles and triangles these divisions repre sented the administration the liaisons to the administration and students respectively the goal of this exercise was to show the different perspectives of these groups the purpose of this workshop was to learn how to best communicate differences break down barriers and solve problems herman said in addition to the various workshops the senators visited the cannon building which houses the united states senators offices the senators had the opportunity to hold debates over campus issues in the same room where the mccarthy hearings took place we were able to relate our experiences at lehigh with real life experiences of the united states senators herman said we got a real feel for how things work in washington d.c some of the issues debated and discussed by the student senate included structural improvements a campus pub the parking problems increasing school spirit interaction and communication amoung various campus organizations garbage pickup and improving the campus television station kirk gibson 99 a student senator thought the weekend was beneficial the washington trip was a great experi ence in the sense that we got to meet the other senators and become more confident about working together he said we're all really excited to make improvements for the school presidential debate causes mixed feelings by jennifer o'brien news writer president bill clinton and senator bob dole took advan tage of sunday night's presidential debate to challenge each other on a number of issues their performance will influ ence the decisions of american voters when they head to the polls next month the 90-minute debate which was broadcast from bushnell theater in hartford conn and mediated by pbs commenta tor jim lehrer gave the democratic and republican candi dates a chance to promote their personal agenda while chal lenging the plans and records of the opponent ross perot was not present at the debate because he was barred by the bipartisan commission on presidential debates and both the presidential campaigns after his weak position in recent popularity polls determined he did not have a chance of winning the election b w photo by daphnie sicre rob lang 98 policewoman christina karavoulias and t.j pinto 97 enjoy the police block party on wednesday community service coordinator chosen by michelle katz news writer for the past three weeks julie de motte has been working as community service coordinator a position that is new to lehigh there is a new capacity to this position de motte said originally the chaplain's office had a lot to do with the commu nity service on campus but that has obviously changed last spring de motte graduat ed from lafayette college where she worked at the community ser vice center and coordinated a wide range of programs for underprivi leged children and hospitals de motte has set numerous goals for herself as community service coordinator i'd like to work with many different groups on campus she said i have contacted most of the service clubs and we are defi nitely under way one of the problems i'm finding is that peo ple don't have the means of trans portation to get to the events de motte realizes the impor tance of encouraging the greek system to get involved she has contacted fraternities and soror ities and begun to plan events with the interfraternity council and the panhellenic council de motte is supported by three assistants kristen crooks 99 janine trindade 99 and mary shanley 99 crooks is working on alterna tives to spring break options we're thinking of sponsoring a habitat for humanity she said it's a program where peo ple travel somewhere for a week and build houses for less fortu nate people
