the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 v01 104 no 10 tuesday october 8 1996 all the lehigh news first zoellner to open on schedule by kathy calogredes news writer the music theatre cultural affairs and museum operations departments are anxiously awaiting the january opening of the zoellner arts center currently under construction although the center will be open for use in january it will not be open for public rental until sometime in september the center contains two art galleries 11 rehearsal rooms dressing rooms three the aters a scene shop a costume shop a ticket office and office space the baker theater is a 1,000-seat concert hall which will be used for special music events it also has a movable piece of stage which will seat the orchestra when it is low ered in two other positions it can act as an extra stage or extra audience seating the baker theater also has a trap door in the wooden floor of the stage the other two theaters are the 300-seat diamond theater and a 100-seat theater that remains unnamed we talk about what the center will do for us it also includes what it will do for the community said david kasten technical director of the zoellner arts center organizations in the lehigh valley helped fund the 33-million project the center will be open for public use once the departments are familiar with the space kasten said debbie sacarakis director of the zoellner arts center said the opening of the center will offer many new options i think the building will serve as a focal point for many of the arts programs being offered she said sacarakis also the cultural affairs coordi nator feels the zoellner arts center will serve other purposes as well it will give the cultural events series pro grams a permanent home she said certain aspects of the building need to be finalized and brought up to date in the center as part of the construction process kasten explained that the plans from 1994 included technology that has since advanced students get involved at election time by patrick doherty news writer the november elections are fast approaching and some lehigh students are becoming highly involved martha hoerst 98 chairwoman of the college republican club said her organization is preparing for the local and national elections through a combination of campaigning and fundraising represented sigma phi epsilon fraternity at freshman rush convocation last wednesday night each fraternity had a station set up in the ulrich student center conference promotes accounting by christine karkazis news writer the fifth annual conference on accounting professionalism was held this weekend for junior accounting majors to learn how to conduct themselves in a busi ness environment the objective of this three-day conference was to expose students to issues of professionalism improve their interpersonal skills and introduce them to potential career opportunities in accounting the director of the conference this year was accounting profes sor marilyn greenstein accounting professors jim largay and kenneth sinclair also helped organize the program in which over 50 accounting pro fessionals served as panelists and group leaders sinclair said for the first four years lehigh was the only school that held such a conference for its students this year the university of wisconsin contact ed lehigh about the conference and recently held a similar con ference of its own although attendance is volun tary sinclair said virtually all the junior accounting majors attend and appreciate the weekend it's somewhat tiring but they see the value of it he said you cannot do everything in the classroom with the conference we try to supplement what goes on in the class v the first session on friday afternoon involved small group discussions regarding ethics in the work place the students who were dressed in formal busi ness attire pretended they were members of a company debating ethical issues surrounding com pany employees it was good because it was a chance for us to have an open forum and discuss ethical issues that we know we will face brodi jackson 98 said in
