the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 104 no 5 friday september 20 1996 all the lehigh news first job fair yields career opportunities by jen kucha rski news writer on wednesday 95 companies sent representatives to lehigh for the annual career fa in lacocca hall the fair which is sponsored eve m : year by career services was held from 4-8 p.m we're really pleased with our corporate response said marilyn mackes executive director of career services and corporate relations last year we had 77 companies send representatives to the fair mackes also said many of the corporations were very impressed with the quality of lehigh students marian dacounza a representative from the prudential a leading insurance and financial services company agreed with mackes the career fair is wonderful we're meeting a lot of interesting students inquiring abou 1 . informa tion about prudential dacounza said we look for ward to recruiting here this year b w photo by jenn robbins students goi dressed up to search for the perfect job at wednesday's career fair representatives from 95 companies were in attendance students stand up against violence by casey bahrenburg news writer students against violence has come to lehigh to promote stu dent awareness about the exis tence of violence around us what we can do to end it gosalia founder and president said the group has two purposes the primary purpose is aware ness of the urban and domestic violence that surrounds both the lehigh community as well as the urban and domestic violence that permeates our entire nation gosalia said * gosalia said the other purpose ' of sav is to discourage violence as a whole the secondary purpose is to actually make a difference in the mentality of individuals in regard to the epidemic of violence that has spawned across our nation gosalia said gosalia became involved with sav in high school in washington d.c and is very excited about its arrival at lehigh it has made its way to new york philadelphia miami and now u has even spread across the west he said t.ehigh university will be the firs large university to contain a specific group for sav :â– james d jackson assistant professor of psychology has been appointed as the acuity adviser for sav and is very optimistic about the program i think that it is about time a group steps forward and does something about violence jackson said a club of this nature is needed at this time jackson also feels sav has the intentions as well as the potential to be very successful at lehigh a lot of groups start out with ood intentions but then they eventually die out jackson vaic our goal with sav is to oli y ify the organization as a on standing member of the enti i lehigh community i nth gosalia and jackson are pleased that university productions his included sav in the oct 20 concert by the rap group a tribe called quest what we are looking for is to find harmony in the music gosalia said we want the stu dent body to be peaceful with music while having all the races of people at lehigh come togeth er and then leave as one there are four membership options lor those individuals interested in becoming a part of sav - official honorary youth and faculty in addition to the president treasurer faculty adviser and the general body there will also be a faculty advisory committee senate tackles parking and transportation issues by gabriela 3 schneider assistant news editor studer senate moderated a public meeting me jay to discuss parking regulations the neeting was held in the kenner theater of the ulrich student center a panel of thrt ..;, rhonda gross vice president of finan e and administration chris christian director of transporta tion services and pat potak manager of parking services answered students questions regarding the controversial plan which has raised on-campus park ing fees considerably the purpose of these meetings is to help students voice their opinions and also to clarify what the new parking reg ulations are student senate president doug herman 98 said herman also said he tried to stay out of the dialogue between the panel and students only intervening when he felt there was a need so one-on-one debates would not erupt about 50 people filled the theater representing an appropriate sample of the student body including both greeks and non-greeks off-campus and dormi tory residents and graduate students as well as undergraduates senator orly tabak 99 was pleased with the turnout at monday's meeting although she had qualms with the tone of the discussion i'm glad a lot of people came who weren't involved with senate i like these meetings because i think they arc effective tabak said confusion arose especially during discussions pertaining to visitor parking baw photo by michelle heyse chris christian director of transportation services spoke at monday's public meeting see career page 5 see violence page 5 see senate page 5 '* i the volleyball team shut out army on tuesday afternoon see page 20 sports 18-20 football preview 18 women's tennis 19 golf 19 kari herzog 20 immmjuhblmh m lehigh students are utilizing a world wide web site to learn about sexually transmitted diseases see page 4 news 1-5 world news briefs 2 big ben tourney 3 news analysis 4 upperclassmen are given more options in on-campus housing see page 7 lifestyle 7-14 fat-free dining 8 piano recita v 11 crossword 1 2 not just a face 13 3-3 percent of american fien and women ages 0-24 are unemployed source usa today
