the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 46 tuesday may 7 1996 all the lehigh news first banquet provides gifts for greeks by jennifer everett assistant news editor fraternities and sororities were recognized on wednesday night for their significant con tributions to the greek system lehigh and the surrounding community the 1996 greek recognition banquet was held at the comfort suites on third street an award is presented each year to a greek man and woman who according to the interfraternity council represent in all facets of life the positive aspects attributed to mem bers of the greek system this years winners were kimberly miller 96 and ben malekzadeh 96 many people deserved that same award because they took a leadership role malekzadeh said it takes a lot of courage to step up and take a leading role the quay cup is presented to the fraternity chapter that exhibits the best qualities of the interfraternity system which includes school spirit participation outside of the school com munity service interfratemal relations charac ter ideals and achievement this year's recipi b w photo by chris faile from left eric varady 96 rich sullo 97 and david caputo 99 accept the quay cup and other awards on behalf their fellow brothers in sigma chi fraternity at the greek recognition banquet soccer team scores with freemansburg elementary grade children and talk about soccer it was a good opportunity to go out and maybe make a dif ference to the kids greg strong 99 said i enjoyed talking with them and i really think they enjoyed having us come it was a learning experi ence for us both the members of the team were greeted warmly by the teachers and students of freemansburg elementary who appreciated the team taking the time to visit we walked into the class room and all the kids were so happy to see us nick dicello 98 said there was such a diversity of faces and everyone seemed to be so interested in what we were saying it feels good to go out and talk with today's kids and to hopefully influence them in their decision making for the future the team's main goal was to show the children that althougti athletics are fun they should not be their top priority they empha sized the need for all students to work hard in school and to keep on reading because athletics can only take them so far the team stressed that children should set their goals high and strive to go to college and make the best of themselves we were able to visit a few first grade classes and a special education class said mike o'connell the team's assistant coach we wanted to show them that when we were young we were able to go out and have fun on the soccer field but we always made sure there was plenty of time left to do our work dan martin 99 said i really think we got through to all of them by taking a little time out of our day to come over here i think we really made a big difference both the coaches and players enjoyed the experience and plan to make the trip to the school a yearly visit by ted dim ig news writer members of the lehigh men's soccer team have been visiting freemansburg elementary school as participants in the reading week program for the past week coach dean koski along with his fellow club soccer teammate eric bellucci a teacher at freemansburg elementary school came up with the idea of having the members of the team go over to the school and read to first teske honored at year-end concert by kathy calogredes news writer friday's pop concert at mountaintop campus which included performances by the wind and jazz ensembles was dedicated to casey teske profes sor of music who conducted his final concert at lehigh this would be the perfect time to let him know how highly we think of him said mike d'ambrosio 96 introducer and horn player next year teske will be teach ing music at clarion university of pennsylvania in claric/n pa paul salerni professor of music believes it is a great oppor tunity that awaits his colleague it's a wonderful job that he's going to clarion's gain is lehigh's loss he said teske has been teaching at lehigh for the past seven years during his third year here he formed the wind symphony in response to students interest in per forming during the fall semester the only performance group that existed in the fall semester prior to the creation of the wind symphony was the marching band the complement to the wind symphony is the wind ensemble which teske conducts in the spring semester teske has been dedicated to making the students play better salerni said this is the primary mission of the music department one of the things we do very well is to educate students in music no n hopes that the . will pursue musical professions but i 1 hopes that they wil become the educated audiences for musical performances salerni said teske concurred with salerni s mission statement at lehigh our ultimate goal is to educate consumers and connoisseurs of music he said many music students believe teske's contributions toward this goal will be sorely missed the music department is los ing its most valuable asset in teske because he was both a great conductor and a good friend greg chludzinski 97 said d'ambrosio said teske has mastered the balance between having a good time with those under his command and getting the job done i truly believe that professor teske has taught us how to make see awards page 6 see teske page 6 the women's lacrosse team defeated harvard university 11-10 sunday to capture the ecac championship see
