the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 36 tuesday march 26 1996 all the lehigh news first choir ends 96 tour in packer chapel by lisa a jones news writer the lehigh university choir performed the final conceit of its on tour 1996 series in packer memorial chapel saturday evening the tour consisted of six other performances including one at walt disney world in florida saturday's concert featured the premiere of magnificat which means song of mary writ ten by steven sametz director of the lehigh university choir for the tour program sametz got the idea for the set ting of the song on a plane ride from katmandu when he heard sounds that were incredibly static pulsing with only occasional vari ations he then realized that the unique sounds were being pro duced by the plane's engine it was a music of the spheres for me - something we have around us at all times and rarely recognize consciously he said another highlight of the evening was the performance by the overtones a smaller group of 15 choir members that present more upbeat and jazzy pieces than the traditional choir selec tions the overtones performed var ious songs involving the theme of love and romance they sang songs such as stuff like that there by bette midler why do fools fall in love and a blues ballad titled how come you don't call me the overtones also sang i want to hold your ear original ly performed by the muppets over spring break the choir toured in florida giving concerts at churches in lakeland rockledge boca raton cape coral and tampa they also gave a 20-minute performance in walt disney world after the florida trip the choir was excited about being back at lehigh for the final concert we've worked hard we've taken it on tour and it's really strong tour manager melanie walsh 96 said choir member christiaan adams 96 said,'the tour was great and this is a great way to end it i love the music aopi's mr lehigh rocks grace hall by giselle gutierrez news writer alpha omicron pi sorority kicked off its 12th annual mr lehigh contest in lower grace hall thursday night aopi hosts this event to support their national philanthropy the arthritis research foundation last year aopi was able to raise 2,600 this year they achieved their goal to raise 3,000 the money was raised with the help of parent contributions alum ni donations sponsors deja brew and going greek and ticket sales jolly janson greek affairs coordinator said i think their philanthropy is a good cause to support the contest is an opportu nity for all the greeks to get together and have fun while sup porting a good cause the mr lehigh 1996 mantle was awarded to zeta psi fraternity representative dan poritzky 99 for the talent part of the com petition poritzky pantomimed several funny dances to music like the lawnmower man the base ball player and the grocery shopper he received a 50 gift certifi cate to anna mia's and a 20 gift certificate to play it again i was very surprised and extremely happy that i won the contest it was the most exciting thing that has ever happened to b vv photo by mark rubins michael rizzo 99 drags his heels on stage in grace hall for the aopi mr lehigh contest last thursday powell's speech may appear on lu cable by toby bonagura news writer u this is an exciting event that will be heavily attended recognizing and celebrating the quality and achievements of the college of arts and sciences ron ticho assistant vice president for university relations -
